About Needoo Grill

Needoo Grill is a Punjabi restaurant at 87 New Rd in London, near the East London Mosque in Whitechapel. The menu runs to 129 dishes, and the grill side centres on mixed grill served on sizzling platters, with lamb chops and the Chapali Kebab alongside. Lamb curries, biryani and dal sit elsewhere on the menu for those who want something slower than the grill. A private dining room gives groups a space of their own, and reservations are required. Payment is cash only, and the restaurant serves no alcohol, so guests bring their own.

Customer Review Summary

Lamb chops are the draw reviewers raise most, described as spicy, tangy, juicy and smoky, usually from the mixed grill, which several call generous enough to share. Close behind are the biryani and curries such as Karachi Lamb, Lamb Dhansak and the nihari, plus a chilli paneer starter, a tasty shami kebab and very fresh naan. Service is often called welcoming and better than at a busier rival, and prices are described as reasonable. Opinions on the mixed grill are not uniform: one reviewer found it pricy and not so flavourful, and another thought the lamb and chicken from it were tough and cold in the middle. The biryani was called only average by two reviewers, and a butter chicken was judged a bit too tangy. One diner who raised a lamb curry that tasted slightly off with the waiter said the response was rude. Several note the decor is glitzy, and one mentions cash-only payment and that no alcohol is served, so tipping was left to the diner.

“Dined at Needoo last night with some mates, all of whom are experienced curry smiths who know their way round the cuisine of the subcontinent. One of our party could comfortably be described as a veteran of the field, a man who’s eaten literally thousands of curries, sides and sundries. And I’ll speak plainly here: he was impressed. We all were. The words “outstanding” and “exceptional” were uttered more than once. Don’t be fooled by the glaringly snazzy decor. This is not a flashy establishment - it’s a place that serves terrific food, reasonably priced and with welcoming, attentive service. The nuts and bolts: we shared a chilli paneer starter (“extraordinary” “a subtle spice that grows on you”) then each had a curry with rice (Aloo meat, Karachi Lamb, Lamb Dhansak, Pumpkin Curry), some poppadoms and two naans (“the freshest naan in the history of Indian food, globally”). There were no bad notes whatsoever and simply put, we will be returning.”

“This place was a surprise. The decor is a bit glitzy for my liking, but don't let that put you off going in. The food was excellent. The mixed grill starter £22.95 was superb, the lamb chops were spicy and tangy, an explosion of spice. Well worth the price as there was enough for 4 to share. The chicken biryani was good, no sign of those awful sultanas that are often added. Portions were generous and the staff were nice. They don't serve alcohol and payment is cash only, so bring your own beer if you want and make sure and tip the good service as there was no service charge included.”
