About La Petite Auberge

La Petite Auberge is a French restaurant at 283-284 Upper St in Islington, London, run as a traditional bistro. The menu opens with escargot, and the mains include steak and Civet du Lapin, a rabbit dish served in a mustard sauce. Fries come alongside the mains, and a lunch set is offered for daytime visits. Dogs are welcome with a prior reservation, provided they are quiet and well behaved, so guests can bring a pet along. Guests under 7 are not admitted after 5pm, which keeps evening tables for adults and older children.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often single out the escargot, described as flavourful and melting in the mouth, with parsley butter and bread to mop it up. Close behind are the mains: steak cooked well, rabbit in a tarragon and whole grain mustard sauce, and a duck leg with crispy skin that falls apart easily. Two reviewers praise the fries or potato chips for their crunchy outside and soft centre. Two call the lunch set good value, and several describe a cosy, warm room with friendly staff who explained dietary options, plus a large choice of vegetarian dishes. The one mixed review found the French onion soup tasted mainly of onion, the green beans very crunchy, and the red wine sauce on the Boeuf Bourguignon hard to taste, though the mash was tasty. Desserts such as the creme brulee, tarte tatin with ice cream and a classic crepe draw praise, and one table found theirs so good they walked off the mains and came back later.

“What a delight to eat out at a restaurant with such amazing service. The meals were fresh, piping hot, and absolutely delicious. The escargot’s were cooked to perfection. Just melted in the mouth. The tarragon and whole grain mustard sauce complemented the Civet du Lapin (rabbit). The bonus was we could use the Taste card on most meals. Phone through to book if using this. Would I go again. Absolutely!”

“This restaurant is super beautiful and so aesthetically pleasing. It gives such a strong French heart 🥰 Asim the manager is so wonderful he couldn’t do enough for us. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day to be there. I loved the food and roast was good.”

“Authentic French cuisine in London at an amazing value with their lunch set. A lovely interior that whisks you away from Islington and evokes a genuine classy feel. The escargot was flavourful and the parley butter was moreish with the bread to mop it all up. Up next, the croque madame was delightfully decadent and the fries had a perfect crispy exterior. The vinaigrette worked excellent to cut through the richness. Finally, the classic crepe rounded off a splendid lunch; simple yet superb!”

The atmosphere was incredibly warm, welcoming, pleasant and relaxing. All of the staff were super attentive about dietary restrictions too. They didn't make us feel bad about them and came to us to explain it all very well which we really appreciated! It just made the whole evening just so much more enjoyable! Special shout-out to our waiter Hakan which service was impeccable!”
