About Ariana II

Ariana II is a family-owned Afghan restaurant at 241 Kilburn High Rd in London, opened in 2010 as the second branch of an Afghan restaurant that began in Manhattan in 1986. Every dish is prepared with halal ingredients. The Kabuli palow pairs a braised lamb shank with rice, carrots and raisins, while the aushak brings lamb dumplings to the table. The lamb karahi comes with naan. The restaurant serves no alcohol, but guests can bring their own with no corkage fee, and mocktails and soft drinks are on the menu. A private dining room is available for groups, and dogs are welcome. Cash is preferred, credit cards are not taken, and electronic transfer is accepted.

Customer Review Summary

Kabuli palow is the dish diners return to most, with its braised lamb shank on fragrant rice described as tender, juicy and excellent. One pair even mixed leftover rice into a lamb karahi to mop up the sauce. Close behind are the dumplings, both aushak and mantu, along with the chicken shish, mixed grill and kebabs. Vegetarians single out the aubergine starters, including banjan and kadoo buranee. Portions are repeatedly called huge or generous, several reviewers say the value is good, and the mocktails are praised too. Service draws as much comment as the food. Servers are described as welcoming, funny and helpful with suggestions, and one reviewer who misunderstood a server at first says to trust their recommendations, since they almost ordered too much. The only complaint is small: one party returning after a theatre show found the baklava sold out and settled for the firnee, which they called tasty. Several mention a mint tea or a dessert brought out on the house.

“Probably the best restaurant in the Kilburn area. Not being familiar with Afghan cuisine, we decided to try the dinner for four, which included a selection of starters, four mains, and desserts. Highly recommend the Aushak (lamb dumplings) and Baunjan Buranee (eggplant) appetizers. For mains, we enjoyed the Mantu (minced meat dumplings with yoghurt and lentils), and the Kabuli Palau (fragrant rice with a braised lamb shank) was excellent. The chicken and lamb kebabs were also delicious. We were attending a play at the Kiln theatre, and arranged to come back after the performance for our desserts. Unfortunately, they were out of baclava when we returned, but the firnee was tasty. The service was attentive and suggestions were very helpful. The restaurant does not serve alcohol, but you can bring your own wine (with no corkage fee!). They do not take credit cards, so bring cash; electronic funds transfer is also accepted. Highly recommend!”

“First time eating here. Samira was very welcoming & introduced us to the best vegetarian choices. The food was served with flair and tasted delicious. Leftovers were kindly put in a take away container for us - great reheated following day. Highly recommend food & service. We’ll be back soon. John & Pauline 🙏🏼”

“First time at this restaurant food was 10/10! Service was 10/10! The portion sizes were very generous and great value for money! Mocktails were very good and once again a generous portion in comparison to other places! Definitely will be back!”

“⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Late Review – Ariana II in Kilburn This is such a late review, but it’s one that’s very much deserved. Ages ago I took my family to Ariana II in Kilburn when we were in London and everyone was hungry for some Afghan food. What started as a simple meal turned into a really lovely experience. This place gets 5 stars from me mainly because my Nan absolutely loved the food, and one of the staff members treated her with so much respect and kindness he even called her “mother.” She still speaks very highly of this place to this day. The décor is vibrant and welcoming, with lots of Afghan culture and history displayed on the walls through pictures and informative captions. It’s a really nice touch you actually get a little Afghan history lesson while you eat. The staff were all nice, friendly, and attentive throughout. The authentic Afghan dishes we ordered were filling, tasty, and we genuinely can’t complain. It’s cheap as well and won’t break the bank very nice and affordable for the quality. The Kabuli pilau was one of the best my Nan has ever had, and I really enjoyed the lamb shank it was so tender, juicy, and full of flavour. The platters and meats were all soft, well-seasoned, and delicious. Even the drinks were refreshing and complemented the meal perfectly. Address: 241 Kilburn High Rd, London NW6 7JN Overall, you can’t go wrong with Ariana II. If you’re in Kilburn and haven’t tried it yet, I would definitely recommend you go. Parking is very difficult as it’s on a busy high street. I suggest parking on one of the many side roads nearby and walking a short distance. A warm, authentic, and family-friendly Afghan restaurant. Highly recommended! 🇦🇫🍛”

Highlights

“Our journey began in 1986 Manhattan New York, where the first branch of Ariana welcomed guests to fine authentic Afghan dishes. The success of the first branch paved the way to open a second in London. Our search led us to the vibrant and multicultural Kilburn High Road, hence the birth of Ariana II in 2010. Ariana II is a family-owned restaurant, which offers a full array of cultivating and aromatic Afghan dishes for your dining pleasure. Indulge in the iconic Kabuli palow (Qabli Palow, Kabuli Pilao),featuring a melting, slow cooked lamb shank buried in a mound of traditional Afghan rice, shrouded in caramelised carrots and raisins. All our dishes are prepared with halal ingredients, ensuring the best afghan food experience.”
