About 042 Restaurant and Bar

042 Restaurant and Bar is a West African restaurant in London at 885 High Rd Leytonstone, where a DJ plays music that grows louder later in the night. The kitchen serves grilled whole tilapia with plantain, and pepper soup is on the menu as well. Jollof rice is part of the menu, and fried yam and fried plantain can be ordered as sides. Chapman and Nigerian bottled drinks are served alongside the food, so a meal here can run from the first plate through to the late-night music.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return most for the fish, with the grilled fish and whole tilapia called remarkable and served in massive portions. The seafood okra and pepper soup also draw praise, the soup described as too salty but too delicious to stop eating. Chapman and Nigerian bottled drinks get mentions, and several credit the DJ for music that suits all ages. Slow food is the most repeated complaint, and one reviewer now orders for collection to avoid the wait. Others say the lights dim so far that they struggled to read the menu or ate in the dark, and one says the manager and owner dismissed the concern. One reviewer found the tilapia and its sauce bland, and another objects to an entry charge on a night with no event. One diner reports seeing food they had paid for placed on the floor and cites a low hygiene rating. One takeaway order of beef stew with fried yam arrived as a tiny portion of beef suya sealed tightly in foil.

“Very bland and not sufficiently spiced fish and sauce to add to the six pieces of plantain that came with the whole tilapia. Very disappointed with the visit.”

“I hate to have to give three stars but I had no other choice. My sister and I came from about three hours away this Sunday just to eat the amazing fish we had heard about. We ordered the fish and it was just as amazing as we had heard. Massive portions and great service. We had multiple chapmans and it was just as great! Loved it. I also, ordered beef stew with fried yam to go with. Imagine my surprise seeing beef suya after travelling all the way back and expecting to properly enjoy my meal. Mind you, it was not what I wanted. I had paid £23 (stew and yam only) which I thought was a little much but was content as I expected the stew to be just as yummy as everything else we had had so far. Not only was it not stew, it was such a tiny portion of suya. It was wrapped so tightly in foil that I was unable to check until it was too late. This really has put a damper on this first experience for me. I hope you rectify and we have better interactions going forward! The service was impeccable. Staff were nice, mostly attentive and helped us understand what exactly we wanted to order. I wished they paid more attention to this particular order.”

“Visited 042 Restaurant & Bar on a Friday night. I didn’t bother with the jollof as I’ve already tasted both Ghanaian and Nigerian jollof and there is no competition, so I went for the chicken starter with fried yam and fried plantain instead, plus a bottle of rosé. The total came to £53, with the rosé costing £25. The food portions were huge and definitely value for money as I couldn’t finish it all, although the food did take ages to arrive. The aesthetics aren’t great, but it’s a nice chilled place to hang out on a Friday night. The DJ played good tunes, although it does get a bit cramped for dancing once it gets busy. Later in the night the lights dim and the music gets much louder, so we ended up eating in the dark a little. Stayed until 4am overall. If you’re going as a group of 5 or more, it’s probably best to book a table in advance.”

“Good spot to hang out with lovely food, the grilled fish seems to be there main special dish.. my favourite seafood okra top notch!”

“Very poor experience at 042 in Leytonstone. I paid for my food while I was there and asked staff to keep it for me while I had a beer. They were refusing at first, but I insisted, and I then literally saw the food being placed on the floor. When I challenged the staff member, he tried to deny it and asked how I knew, but I told him clearly that I had just seen him do it. As the customer, that was completely unacceptable. I then checked the hygiene rating and saw it was 1, which honestly made sense after what I had witnessed. Terrible standards and a very bad experience overall.”
