Customer Review Summary
Sushi is the main draw. The mackerel sushi is named as the signature dish and called flavoursome, while others describe the sushi as fresh and huge, and a sushi and sashimi set as very good. Bento boxes come close behind, including a vegetarian version, and the miso soup earns its own praise. Katsu ju, hot pot dishes, an upside down gyoza pancake and crunchy crab rolls also get mentions, and the staff are repeatedly called friendly. The recurring trade-off is noise. The room is packed and busy, and a loud neighbouring table hurt a diner's ears. A reviewer found the hot dishes less impressive than the sushi and sashimi, and another was disappointed by the desserts and thought the jasmine tea expensive. A reviewer suggests booking because the restaurant was packed. The tempura in a lunch bento, a mix of vegetables and prawns, had super crisp batter.

“Disgusting experience, with a worm and a fly in the same bento box. Until seeing them, I was extremely happy about food, everything tasted great. But suddenly I saw the worm, they changed that plate, then I saw the bug on the sushi, and that was enough. They didn’t charge me obviously but it’s still disappointing. I also didn’t like the guy’s attitude serving food (hint: he wasn’t Japanese).”

“Got a recommendation to Mugen. I choice to book and would suggest other do, it was packed. Staff were lovely, answering any questions we had. Started with a salad, which was simple but very nice. Then miso soup, again really lovely. Me a friend when for the bento boxes. They were around £26-27 each. Selection was fantastic. Sushi was good, as was the salad. However the tempura was fabulous, mix of veg and prawns. Batter was super crisp. Well worth going for lunch. Only slight down side and not a complaint, it’s noisy, mainly cos it’s so busy. If you want a quiet place for lunch, this might not be the place. If you want amazing food, it’s definitely the place to go.”

“The sushi and assorted sashimi set was very good. The hot dishes were nice as well, although they were not as impressive as the sushi and sashimi. Unfortunately, there was a table of customers speaking very loudly, which made the experience less enjoyable and hurt my ears. Other than that, everything was good.”

“Had a really delicious solo lunch at Mugen. Front of house was welcome. Staff was very helpful and most importantly the sushi was DELICIOUS. Thank you!”

“A hidden Japanese den on Leather Lane. The starters and mains were delicious and varied, the upside down gyozo pancake was unique, and the crab roles were crunchy and subtle. We were a bit disappointed in the desserts and the jasmine tea was a little expensive, but we'd go back again and I would recommend it to friends.”
