About Doumo Japanese restaurant

Doumo is a Japanese restaurant in London, at 29 Tottenham St, where communal tables sit right beside the sushi chef preparing meals in view. Guests share the room with other diners and can watch the sushi being made. The kitchen combines traditional Japanese cooking methods with modern cooking. Maki and sashimi cover the sushi side, and a range of hot plates sits alongside for anyone wanting something different. The King dragon roll is one of the rolls, the pumpkin korokke gives the menu a fried starter, and ramen adds a noodle option. The dining room is small, with only a few tables, so the chef's counter work and the shared seating take place in the same compact space.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the pumpkin korokke, calling it the best dish and saying they could have ordered ten, with the chilli squid also named among the warm dishes. Close behind come the sashimi, the dragon roll and a generous mixed dim sum box with soft buns and prawn dumplings. Light, crispy tempura and a large don buri bowl also earn praise. Many describe a small, cosy room where the sushi chef can be seen preparing meals beside the tables, with friendly service and reasonable prices. The main reservations are about flavour and service. One reviewer found the curry on the katsu chicken slightly bland, and another thought the ramen broth mild and lacking creaminess. One lunch party described a rude waitress who bumped a guest moving past with a suitcase, and a discount that was not applied correctly at first. Another reviewer had a dish remade for an allergy.

“An app found this place and counted the calories from my photo. The fish salad had plenty of protein and did not taste like diet food. It fit my remaining daily calories well. The dining room was quiet and simple.”

“Actually, a really amazing restaurant great taste and great quality. I would 100% recommend this place. The staff are really helpful and they even remade us one of the dishes due to our allergy needs and they were really nice. The food was great tasting the service was amazing it’s obviously quite busy but they had a table and yeah, anybody who’s thinking about getting Japanese in the area even though this isn’t the most expensive I probably think it’s one of the best so I would definitely recommend it or try it out if you’re looking for something locally”

“Top Japanese food you must try it. This restaurant is cosy and small for around max 16 people. There are 4 tables. Atmosphere is quite with soft music so lovely if you don't like noise. A hidden gem! See the photos I've added for the food - Food is wonderful, every dish is delicious and very generous portions. The mixed Yasai tempura - Deep-fried mixed king prawns (3pcs) & veg (5pcs) tempura with tempura sauce for starter was so light and crispy. Agedashi Tofu appetizer was also lightly coated and crispy and was delicious - (deep-fried fresh tofu, served with light dashi soy and kizami nori seaweed, suitable for vegans). Don buri is a very large bowl with rice veg and packed with flavour plus crispy fried pork and egg on top. The Grill pork in gochujang sauce was absolutely delicious with flavour and the portion was right. We had Dim sum mixed box 9pcs (3x har kau (prawn dumplings), 4x sui mai (pork), 2x char sui buns) - again cannot fault it. The buns were super soft and prawn dumpling perfect. I also had the King dragon roll - see the photo it's pretty and was delicious. The udon noodles in soup with pork and vegetables was a generous portion and again perfect taste. We managed to eat everything and I'm sure we would be back soon to try other dishes as they are so nice and there is a lot more choice on the menu. We had booked through first table so the price we paid was soo reasonable but even without the deal I think the prices are very good especially for the taste and quality of the food. We will visit the larger restaurant in Portland street as well. The service was very friendly and made us feel welcome instantly. If there was anything to improve I would say better quality chopsticks and cutlery and that's all! Thank you for the lovely food it made our evening special.”

Good to know

“Combining traditional Japanese cooking methods with modern cuisine, Doumo is a delightful eatery that promises new style Asian flavours in a stylish space that is as welcoming as they come. Communal tables encourage the social side of dining and helps in the creation of a vibe that makes it an eatery for all, which is only furthered by a friendly service team dedicated to diner comfort. In the likes of the maki and the sashimi, the sushi is out in full force, while there is also a wealth of hot plates on show for those in search of something a little different.”
