About Capricci

Capricci is an Italian restaurant at 72 Holland St in London, close to the Tate Modern. It opened in 2015 and runs a small room with just a few tables and an open view of the cooking, where the father-and-son owners wait tables. The menu changes with the seasons, pairing seasonal dishes like a scallop and artichoke starter with classic Italian plates such as carbonara. Fresh pasta runs from familiar shapes to lesser-known ones, including an aubergine-stuffed pasta. The wine list carries bottles that are hard to find elsewhere, and the hosts recommend a bottle to match the meal. Aperitivo is offered before dinner.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often point to the seasonal, ever-changing menu of more elaborate Italian plates, and the wine list that comes with it. Named dishes include a scallop and artichoke starter, sweetbreads, a classic carbonara, beetroot carpaccio with burrata, chicken liver to start, and aubergine stuffed pasta, with tiramisu mentioned among the desserts. Close behind is the hosting: several describe owners working the floor, recommending wines to suit the meal, and one says the recommendation turned a first proper bottle into a revelation. The small, cosy room and the view of the cooking get repeated mentions too, along with the Tate Modern location. On the downside, one reviewer found the artichoke missing its heart and slightly undercooked, and the fish less fresh and a touch underdone, though the same reviewer called the host a true gentleman. A couple of others note that prices are not cheap, with one adding that quality costs money. One visit ended with a free cappuccino from a barista training session for the staff.

“Lovely find, excellent and authentic, unpretentious and friendly. A menu that ranges fairly widely - we stuck to the familiar but would now be happy to go for the more expensive seasonal offerings. Classy desserts and a nice little wine list too.”

“Excellent little place. We needed a quick and relatively early dinner and were delighted to find room in this excellent Italian restaurant. We had fresh and tasty pasta, both a classic and a lesser known pasta, and some great wine. The service was kind and professional. Lovely place.”

“Tiny but brilliant and authentic Italian restaurant. I live close by and go frequently. While they do sell classic Italian dishes like a great Carbonara, you should try the truly Italian dishes on their ever changing menu that is governed by when things are in season. Yesterday the artichoke season was celebrated with a divine scallop and artichoke starter. A few months ago I had a wonderful truffle dish. My personal favourite are the sweetbreads. They also have very interesting and lovely wines you can’t easily find elsewhere. Yesterday’s beaujolais had an amazing aroma and aftertaste. This is a properly excellent restaurant! The owner’s are the waiters so you can ask them what they recommend and get a free lesson in Italian cuisine!”

“I love this place. It’s so cozy and personal. It’s always the right level of busy. You can see them cooking your food. The food is INCREDIBLE. Possibly the best Italian I’ve had in London. Their menu changes and is so creative. Some flavour combinations that I’ve never heard of before. Massively recommend. This place is seriously under rated.”

“This is the second time that I’ve eaten at Capricci. Below is what we had to eat and it was absolutely delicious, the staff were very attentive and recommended a great bottle of wine as the one we wanted wasn’t available. The pasta is amazing, the beetroot carpaccio with Buratta is pretty fabulous. The restaurant is cosy and really close to the Tate Modern, so after taking in some culture - come here for some aperitivo and some amazing Italian food.”
