About Oriental Star
Communal tables and an open kitchen shape how Oriental Star works, a Chinese takeaway on Finchley Road in London where food is collected on a tray from the counter. Around 68 dishes fill the menu, and each one is numbered, so the staff can talk first-time customers through the options. Starters run to Sesame Prawn Toast, Salt and Pepper Squid and a Deep Fried Duck Roll, while chow mein and fried rice both come in several versions, from chicken and beef to roast duck fried rice. Mini spring rolls are a repeated order alongside a rice dish, and Sichuan chicken turns up regularly too. Dishes are cooked to order, portions come out large, and the kitchen will make a plate spicier if you ask. There are plenty of diner-style tables for anyone who wants to eat in rather than carry the tray out. Service is walk-in, and the doors open daily.

“Post movie dinner brought us here. I had ordered the Roast Pork and Rice with Mini Spring Rolls and asked them to make it spicy. It was really very good and the service is absolutely amazing!”

“This restaurant was on my bucket list in london. Really sweet couple serving people. I ordered vegetable chow mein (large portion) and mini spring rolls (6 pieces). Crispy and Lovely taste with a soy sauce chilli oil dip i made. Chow Mein was spiced up extra as I asked for, yummy taste. They also gave me chopsticks on demand and the vibe of restaurant was quiet and reserved. Seating was great as well, like a diner. Will recommend everyone who like chinese food to eat here !”

“It’s my third time here, the prawn dumpling is my absolute favourite(I don’t have a picture ),the fried rice &schezwan chicken are very good too. I’m not a great fan of their interiors(so I always get a takeaway) ,the service is decent, could be better though ,but I will definitely comeback for the food.”

Customer Review Summary
Fried rice draws the most praise, with reviewers naming roast duck fried rice, the house special rice, chicken fried rice and egg-fried rice, usually alongside big portions and very low prices. One reviewer found the roast duck portion easily double the size elsewhere and surprisingly crispy. Close behind are the noodles, including chicken, beef and vegetable chow mein and beef chow fun, plus Sichuan chicken, prawn dumplings, roast pork and mini spring rolls. A couple of diners say the kitchen made their dish spicier on request. Takeaway orders are described as arriving quickly and still piping hot. Criticism is mild but specific. One reviewer says the flavour is ordinary and matches the price, another suspects the king prawn tempura was fried in used oil, and one dislikes the interior and so always takes food away, finding the service decent but improvable. Several describe friendly staff who helped first-time customers navigate the menu, and one noted the till worker coming out from the kitchen to wipe tables.
