About Noodle & Beer

Noodle & Beer is a Chinese noodle restaurant at 31 Bell Ln in Spitalfields, London, close to Liverpool Street Station. The menu leads with wan za mian noodles, an Asian take on Bolognese for anyone who wants a familiar idea in a different form. The beef noodle soup (niu rou mian) gets its spice from numbing, tingling peppercorn rather than fiery heat. Starters and small plates suit sharing across the table, and the cold aubergine dish is one to order for that. Ribs and fried rice sit on the menu too, and a separate lunch menu runs earlier in the day. The interior carries a Shanghai-style look. Seating is walk-in. The kitchen stops serving before the dining room closes in the evening.

Customer Review Summary

Beef noodle soup draws the most praise, with reviewers describing the beef as tender, rich and strongly flavoured, and the numbing, tingling peppercorn spice as unusual. One finds the numbing effect a bit much. Close behind are the starters: the aubergine and fungus salads, beef jerky, spring rolls and a dessert of fried rice cake get repeated mentions, along with the seafood fried rice, wan za mian and a well-cooked rib. One reviewer found the mouth-watering chicken average, and another notes the tea is pricey next to the food. Diners also describe a warm, welcoming atmosphere, a nicely decorated interior and friendly, attentive staff, with food arriving quickly. The most detailed complaint comes from a late-evening party seated shortly before a 10pm closing. They report that staff began stacking chairs and cleaning at 10 while parties were still eating, a diet coke was refused because the kitchen had closed, and the bill was brought around five minutes later while they were finishing their dishes.

“This was one of the worst service experiences I've ever had, especially when spending $190. And that is very unfortunate because I enjoyed the food (for the few minutes they allowed me to eat it). We arrived at 9:25. When walking in, we specifically asked if they were still taking walk in customers since we knew that they list their closing time as 10pm. The man at the door insisted it was OK and sat our party of 2. We figured this was fine, especially since they take reservations on their website up until 9:45pn. Turns out, this was NOT ok and 10pm closing means they will force you to leave at 10 sharp. I have no idea what they would do to someone who booked a 9:45 reservation.. After sitting down we ordered drinks and the man who sat us came to ask if he could take our order soon because the kitchen needs to close. We placed an order for two appetizers, which came out practically immediately. He then asked if he could take our orders again, so we placed an order for a few dishes. We were sharing small dishes. By now it was around 9:45. We received the food about 10 minutes later. At 10pm sharp, the wait staff started stacking chairs, cleaning tables, cleaning the floor, etc, while numerous parties were still dining. We asked for a diet coke and were told we couldn't get it because the kitchen was closed. Around 10:05 while we were still finishing our food (which we had only had for about 10 minutes), the waitress came to our table and simply said "one bill or two?" with the payment device and and asked for payment right then. I've dined at probably over 150 restaurants and have never experienced someone doing that. It was incredibly rude. If you want to close at 10pm sharp, I completely understand that and it is totally fine. However, you absolutely SHOULD NOT seat new customers if there is not enough time for them to eat their meal before you force them out. Horrible experience.”

“Honestly pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere has a nice vibe, and the interior is well done. Air conditioning kept it cool and comfortable. For the price, it's very fair, and the staff (Shu Qi) were attentive. Good experience overall.”

“This place is a real find! Delicious food, absolutely packed with flavours, at very reasonable prices. Very warm and welcoming service too. We had the fungus sallad and the aubergine sallad as starters and we shared the seafood fried rice as main. Sooooo good!!! We also could not resist a desert, the fried rice cake was yummy! The restaurant is also very beautifully decorated and made us think of turn of the century Shanghai (which was probably not the intention…). Anyway, I truly recommend this rest and we will be back for more very soon!”

“Second visit: looked after by the wonderful Anisha. Tried some plates from the lunch menu. Fried ribs and chicken wings were perfectly fine, but the aubergine and “black ear fungus” were incredible. Wonderful heat, top seasoning/umami. Both these dishes served cold: but do not let that put you off! The main menu (unsurprisingly) offered a plethora of noodle dishes. I’ve had some before and they are all very delicious! Be aware the mouth-numbing chilli is quite the experience, but totally worth it. A real original and a stone’s throw from Liverpool Street Station! 🔥🌶️🍜🌟”
