Quick info
About New Beijing Chinese Restaurant
In London, New Beijing Chinese Restaurant serves Chinese food at 8 E India Dock Rd, with a modest menu that pairs Szechuan dishes with a hidden menu. Dumplings come in 20-piece orders with dark vinegar for dipping, which suits sharing. Other dishes on the menu include Jian noodles and Beef Tendon on Rice, and the hot and spicy soup is listed as serving two. Rice is ordered separately rather than arriving with each dish, and a service charge is added automatically to the bill. A space round the back suits larger groups and family meals. The restaurant is open daily.

Customer Review Summary
Friendly, welcoming staff are what reviewers raise most, with several describing service with a smile and servers who stopped to chat. Food praise centers on specifics: the hot and spicy soup, said to serve four as a starter, beef tendon on rice with tomato and egg soup, plum duck, beef stew with potatoes and noodles, and a chow mein one diner calls possibly one of the best they've eaten. Others mention a calm room, generous rice portions, and reasonable prices. A delivery order of Jian noodles and a 20-piece dumpling arrived lukewarm but still juicy, with chewy skin. The complaints are sharper. One reviewer found the noodles extremely greasy, almost half a bowl of oil, and says a staff member lectured them when they asked to remove the automatic service charge. Another was refused hot water and told to order a tea without the tea bag. Two others found the food salty, and one notes rice is not included with dishes. One diner says staff gave them some of their own meals to try.

“Lovely staff that made you feel really welcome and had lovely attention to detail. Food was amazing and will certainly be back to try other dishes. Nice and calm which is perfect for a date night out but with the space round the back I could very easily imagine it being great for a larger event or family meal.”

“Ate here this evening, met the nicest staff, had the time to talk and exchange conversation, nothing was too much. The food was incredible possibly one of the best chow meins I've eaten, would 100% recommend and return. Great service & Great food 👌”

“Very disappointing experience. The food was honestly one of the worst Chinese meals I’ve had in London. The noodles were extremely greasy (almost half a bowl of oil) and the taste was very poor. What made the experience worse was the service. The restaurant automatically added a service charge. When I politely asked to remove it because the food was not good, the staff member started lecturing me instead of handling it professionally. His logic was quite unbelievable. He told me that I should have “said in advance that I wouldn’t pay the service charge so they could adjust the service accordingly.” This raises a serious question: does this restaurant provide different levels of service depending on whether customers agree to pay the service charge? In the UK, service charge is optional and customers decide whether to pay it based on the overall experience. It is naturally a decision made at the end of the meal, not something customers are obligated to “declare in advance.” Instead of listening to feedback, the staff member kept lecturing me and repeatedly said that “in the UK you must tell restaurants beforehand if you don’t want to pay service charge.” That is simply not true and extremely unprofessional. Bad food combined with a very unfriendly and condescending attitude made this a terrible experience. Definitely would not recommend.”

“Great food and even better service. The staff made us feel right at home, and every dish was cooked to perfection. A reliable neighborhood gem that never misses.”

“Edit: Thank you for your reply. I understand that you’re upset, but I want to clarify that my review was not about attacking your business, but about a disappointing interaction with the customer service we received. The issue was about the way that the request was handled and the attitude was displayed, which I felt was dismissive and unaccommodating. I don't appreciate being accused of "fabricating my review" or being called "a bully" for describing what happened and how I felt during a situation that actually occurred. We were asking for a basic service (hot water), and had hoped for a reasonable solution, along with a respectful attitude. I can see that you've had similar experiences with other customers in regards to the attitude, and your first response, which was deleted also reflected this. I hope that this feedback encourages some reflection on how customer interactions are handled in the future. I wish you the best with your business, and I do hope my feedback helps in some way. ——— Original: Appalled by the customer service of the owner/waiter. We were ordering 2 entrees, 2 mains, 2 desserts and a drink between 2 people. I asked for a cup of hot water and he said- we don’t do hot water, but you can order a tea for £3 and not put the tea bag in. Edit 1 (store's response was deleted): Perhaps you’re mistaking us with another group (as none of the “facts” you’re describing below are correct - i.e. group size and what had occurred). We were disappointed with the attitude of the store, which values counting pennies over customer experience and ended up leaving.”
