About My Old Place
My Old Place is a Chinese restaurant at 88-90 Middlesex St in London, serving Sichuan dishes alongside Dongbei (north-eastern) cooking. The menu includes spicy boiled beef, lamb spine in a pot and Guo Bao Rou, so a table can order across both regional styles. Lamb skewers and beef tongue skewers sit on the same menu as sizzling beef. Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return for the authentic Sichuan and Dongbei cooking, with the sizzling beef, beef tongue skewers, and lamb spine in a pot singled out, and dumplings and vegetables also praised as fresh and not overly greasy. Generous portions suit sharing, and several describe friendly service. Close behind come complaints about consistency. One diner found the Guo Bao Rou portion smaller than what other tables received, and another says portions have shrunk, vegetable dishes now arrive half a plate, rice is charged per person, and water refills are no longer free. Service draws the sharpest criticism. One reviewer describes a waitress who glared and huffed at a request for water, another reports dishes arriving very late and out of order with no update from staff, and a few mention waiting to be seated while unattended. Lower scores also cite mushy, over-boiled beef noodles and Lo Mein, and a twice-cooked pork that lacked garlic. Still, one family recalls the staff handing the kids lollipops at the end of the meal.

“We had an amazing dining experience here! The food was incredibly authentic and reminded us of real home-style Chinese cooking. Every dish was full of flavour and cooked perfectly. The variety on the table was impressive—from fresh seafood to classic stir-fried dishes and savory braised meats. The lamb spine in a pot was beautifully cooked. The dumplings and vegetables were also excellent, and everything tasted balanced and not overly greasy. You can really tell the chefs know traditional Chinese flavors. The ingredients tasted fresh and the portions were generous, which made it perfect for sharing with family and friends. If you’re looking for authentic Chinese cuisine, this place is definitely worth visiting. Highly recommended, and we will absolutely come back again!”

“I come here almost every month,The dishes are consistently delicious as always, but one portion of the Guo Bao Rou was smaller than what other tables received. I hope the chef can make the portions more consistent.”
