About Shan Shui Jian

Shan Shui Jian is a Chinese restaurant at 562 Commercial Rd in London, serving Northeastern (Dongbei) cooking since 2014. The kitchen specialises in dishes like chicken and mushroom stew and fermented cabbage fish, and the menu also takes in sauerkraut with pork and mapo tofu. With a large menu and many options, a table can order across several of these regional plates. The restaurant is a small place furnished with just chairs and tables, so the food is the focus. Tea arrives in a cast iron pot and is refilled during the meal.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often single out the Northeastern Chinese dishes, especially the chicken stew with mushrooms, which a few describe as delicious. Close behind are the mapo tofu, the lamb spine in a herby broth where the meat falls off the bone, and the Chinese sauerkraut with pork. Others praise the kimchi rice, the salt and pepper squid, and a cucumber chicken salad. Many call the food very authentic, with plenty of spice and chili, and portions are described as large. Service draws mixed accounts. Several find the staff friendly and helpful with choosing dishes and reducing spice, and one reviewer says the food came fast. Others report very long waits for both food and the bill on a busy Saturday, with delivery orders going out ahead of a half-empty dining room. One describes two similarly named dishes being mixed up, with the server refusing to help and handing over a box for leftovers to pack themselves. One reviewer was glad they booked ahead at the small, plain room. Tea arrives in a cast iron pot and is refilled without anyone asking.

“My friend and I wanted to try Northeastern Chinese / Dongbei cuisine specifically, so we went for the Chinese sauerkraut with pork and the chicken stew with mushrooms. We also ordered a cold tofu in garlicky sauce starter. (We over-ordered- that was too much for the 2 of us!) Everything was delicious, and the waiter very helpful and friendly. I also really appreciated the fact that our tea came in a cast iron pot and was regularly refilled without us even needing to ask.”

“Perfectly barebones simple cafe style restaurant. Menu is a little overwhelming, great pictures, but so much choice! Lots and lots of unusual northern Chinese options but also many of the familiar dishes for the less adventurous eater. Portions are large. Kimchi rice is an exercise in delicious self sabotage - spicy and sour with generous kimchi. One of the best salt and pepper squid I've ever had. Better than Four Seasons in Gerard Street. The pork mince vermicelli was stretchy and chewy and perfectly spiced, a wonderful immersive Sichuan experience! Green beans with pork mince could have been better with proper long beans but the seasoning was so excellent with crunchy chilli pieces. I also tasted a piece of sweeter than expected Kung Pau chicken, but the ratio of nuts to chicken was great. Others had tofu and beef in black bean sauce and a noodle dish but as we were in a large group of people who didn't all know one another and weren't instinctively table sharers I didn't taste all. I think the food would be better shared family style, and they lost points because the service was exceptionally slow and inattentive. There were 2 large tables (including our party) and the rest of the seating was empty, but we had very long waits for the food and also before we could even ask for the bill. There was also a steady stream of delivery orders appearing and disappearing but it's alway hard to wait for food when the hold up is invisible delivery clients. However perhaps on a Saturday evening they could be more prepared for being busy? I will definitely go back despite the tricky location, the menu had so many options and I need to see how it goes family style as it should be.”
