Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the gluten free cooking, and the salt and chilli squid is the dish named most, described as crispy and melt in the mouth. Close behind are the sweet and sour chicken and prawns, along with the beef in black bean sauce, crispy duck, black pepper lamb and the handmade dim sum. Several coeliac diners say the gluten free options taste like the originals and feel safe, and one group mentions homemade gluten free crispy onions. Portions are called generous but not heavy, and the food fresh and not overly greasy. The owner draws repeated praise for being welcoming, and the service is described as quick without feeling rushed. The one caveat is that a reviewer found no formal allergen menu on their visit, though staff were happy to explain what was safe. Another reviewer says the owner came over to explain how the gluten free food is prepared and mentioned more dishes in the works. One diner notes the owner refilling their sweet chilli sauce before they had to ask.

“Would highly recommend, exceptional food, attentive service & really good playlist of music. The owner is extremely hospitable and we will definitely be back. Recommend the crispy duck and black pepper lamb dishes. The food was generous portions and not heavy, all the dishes we had we enjoyed.”

“We visited for the first time last night after looking for a good local Chinese we were very excited to see lotus lounge had opened! What a great spot, best Chinese we’ve ever had (and that’s saying a lot as we’ve tried many and even both used to work at one!). Stephen and the team are so warm and welcoming, the food is ridiculously fresh and flavoursome - what more could you want! Oh and Stephen was even refilling our sweet chilli sauce before we had to ask, bonus points!!! Thank you, see you soon!”

“Authentic homemade dim sum/dumplings, very juicy and fresh. Chill oil would be a great supplement if you are a master of favours. Beef is tender, Squid is crispy, and the mixee vegetables are healthy and delicious. Plenty of Gluten-free choices. Best ever experience with Chinese cuisine in recent years, both the decent environment with thoughtful interior design and the convenient location near Clapton Junction brings it more into my heart. Highly Recommended and warmly welcomed!”

“We had the best time at Lotus Lounge with a group of 20 coeliac/gluten free guests. It couldn’t have been better. The food was incredible, and the service was super quick without feeling rushed. We had some standout dishes: the crispy chilli squid, the tofu dishes were next level, beef in black bean sauce and the sweet and sour chicken (A lot of nostalgic classics you never get to have gluten free) were just incredible. They even make their own gluten free crispy onions to garnish dishes!! A special shoutout to Stephen, the owner, who is so warm and welcoming. You can really tell he genuinely cares, especially when it comes to inclusivity. It’s rare to find a place that is so thoughtful and accommodating! If you’re gluten free, this place is an absolute gem. The whole experience felt easy, safe, delicious, and everyone was properly looked after! Just to note: When we visited they didn't have a formal allergen menu, which might feel a bit uncertain at first. However, the staff is happy to help! You can call in advance or just chat with them when you arrive to see what’s safe. To give you a head start, everything we’ve highlighted in yellow was gluten free when we visited.”

“Being gluten free when you hear there is a Chinese restaurant doing gluten free, well I had to try it. Menu clearly marked, I went for salt and pepper squid, which was melt in the mouth, then I got sweet and sour chicken, one of the best I have ever had, even before being gluten free, I got rice with chicken and prawns, oh and I got prawn crackers, it was so good and so hot. The stat are super nice too.”
