About Potter & Reid
Potter & Reid is a cafe on Toynbee St in Spitalfields, London, open daily for breakfast and lunch. The breakfast menu includes an egg bap, and the lunch menu changes weekly with the seasons and nods to Italian ingredients, with natural wines available alongside. Fresh pastries, including a pistachio croissant, are baked daily, and warm scones can be taken away or eaten in. Coffee is the focus, and the kitchen makes its coffee syrups in-house. A no laptop policy applies, and there are no power outlets for laptops, so the tables are kept for coffee and food. Shelves in the shop sell coffee beans for home brewing, house preserves and a small selection of natural wine.

Customer Review Summary
Coffee is what reviewers raise most, with an Americano called excellent, a good filter coffee, and one reviewer noting that many of the coffee syrups are made in house. Banana bread comes up repeatedly alongside it. Diners also single out a warm scone, a pistachio croissant, an egg bap that one reviewer credits with curing a hangover, cheese toast, and scrambled eggs on toast. Staff are described as friendly and warm, the room as cosy with people chatting, and one reviewer mentions free sparkling water and a clean WC. The complaints are practical. A few raise the laptop situation, with one noting there are no power outlets and another seeing people upset about the no laptop policy, though that reviewer enjoyed pen and paper instead. One weekend lunch visitor found most food options gone, and another called the food overpriced and nothing special. One takeaway scone came with extra butter but no jam.

“I’ve been visiting this place for a while and just wanted to finally post a review because I love it so much. A great independent local cafe offering thoughtful food and lovely lunches for everyday. Lovely staff and great coffee. Posted a bunch of my favourite lunches I’ve had recently including beautiful salmon and the egg bap which I think cured my hangover from hell. A nice treat to walk down on a Saturday and enjoy.”

“I started the day in the neighbourhood, determined to try their famous scones. Tucked a little off the main street, the café was only a 10-minute walk away. Even though it was early morning and the streets were still quiet, I could spot it from a distance. There was already a queue of people waiting for a table. The café had a neat, tidy, and homely feel, with a spacious seating area inside, a few tables outside, bright lighting, and plenty of natural sunshine streaming in. The pastries fresh out of the oven looked incredibly tempting, but I had come for one thing—a scone. I had an appointment to get to, so I ordered mine to go. And voilà! The scone was still warm, with a beautifully crumbly texture and the rich aroma of butter. It was every bit as satisfying as I had hoped. My only disappointment was that, although they packed an extra serving of butter, they forgot the jam. As a true scone lover, I can’t call a scone without jam a perfect one. Next time, I’ll stay and enjoy it fresh in the café. Bookmarked. And a special thanks goes to the service team for having bold smiles at that time on Saturday morning 👏”

“Stopped by for a quick coffee while waiting for a store to open. Service is great and coffee is too! Free sparkling water and the WC was clean. Always a bonus when you’re just out wandering around the city.”

“This place was recommended to us by our airbnb as a nice place for breakfast. Potter & Reid turned out to be in my opinion nothing special. The food was overpriced and really nothing special. The place was nice to sit and relax. The atmosphere was pleasant, quite and good for a relaxing breakfast. Not a good place to work from as they dont have power outlets for laptops.”

“Potter & Reid is a neighbourhood Cafe in the heart of Spitalfields. Our focus is outstanding coffee, quality, nourishing food and a true sense of community. A concise but always-tempting breakfast and lunch menu is made up of simple, comforting and delicious dishes with a nod to Italian ingredients. The lunch menu changes weekly reflecting the change in seasons and ingredients available and can be accompanied by a selection of natural wines. Home made sweet treats and fresh pastries are also available daily. Shelves containing coffee beans for home brewing, a small but hand-picked selection of natural wine, house preserves and other simple ‘dinner party’ provisions are available to buy in store.”
