About The Wren Tavern

On Watling St in London, The Wren Tavern is a pub at 67-69 with a whiskey vault and a basement cocktail bar called 5cc, which serves artisan cocktails. The basement bar can be hired for parties and events, and it has its own seating area. The ground floor holds a dedicated dining area, along with booths and high tables, in dark wood and dim lighting. The kitchen covers a burger, calamari and schnitzel. At the bar, the keg beers include less common options, alongside a couple of hand-pulled real ales. The pub shows live football, including England and Champions League Final games, and match nights get very busy. Tables can be booked, and a designated space at the back of the pub is set aside for groups.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the service, with several describing staff who looked after big groups during busy football nights, from a retirement gathering with its own space at the back to a Champions League Final booking. Food draws praise for the burger, with its secret sauce and skin-on fries, alongside the roast cod, beetroot hummus, schnitzel, calamari and padron peppers. Cocktails split opinion: one reviewer called the margaritas the best in a long time and another praised off-menu creations, while a third found every cocktail watered down and bitter. That same reviewer called the squid starter dry and oily and the basement smelly. Another complaint concerned a 50% off food promotion that was capped and only explained after seating, then left off the bill, and management refused to honour it after repeated back and forth. The keg beer selection, the outdoor area out front and the dark wood interior also get mentions, and one reviewer who stopped in only to use the toilets ended up staying for lunch.

“Excellent service- above and beyond. Great atmosphere in a beautifully decorated London pub. Food was great and reasonably priced, staff were attentive and friendly, margarita cocktails were the best we’ve had in a long time! Felt very lucky to have stumbled upon this gem!”

“Not great. The basement, where we were sat had a very disgusting fishy smell. Their cocktails weren't great either. They were disgusting, tasted watered down, very bitter and hardly any alcohol. We kept trying different ones thinking and hoping they'll taste better but they were all rubbish. The food was box standard, dry, overly fried and overpriced. Please don't order the squid starter. Over fried, dry and too oily... This pub was a real let down. On a more positive note, the England 2:1 game that evening was epic.”

“Shibu was fantastic. I went into the pub asking to use the toilets only with my 8yr old son as well walked past. The venue was so good we stayed for lunch. I walk past regularly as a food safety auditor and consultant but have never been in. What a lovely venue and the friendliness of the duty manager and staff was made it even better, excellent service and hospitality, not often found in London these days. Well done, you've gained a new customer. Many thanks”

“A sincere thank you to Polly and her team last night (England V DR Congo) and our colleague’s retirement “do”. Probably the hottest place on the planet but what a great atmosphere and credit to the team for working so hard in such a busy and hot environment. Nothing was too much trouble and having our own designated space at the back of the pub was fantastic. A great memorable evening plus great football score! Thank you! We will definitely be back!”
  • Rebecca Hardy
“We didn’t get food but had a couple of drinks. Shibu served us, he was very friendly, polite and helpful. Was lovely to chat to him. The pub is beautiful inside but we sat outside as it was a lovely day and the outside area was great. Will definitely be back!”
