About The Jeremy Bentham
The Jeremy Bentham is a pub on University St in Bloomsbury, London, two minutes from UCL. It has been restored to its original name, and it runs a drinks deal for students and NHS staff, who show a card at the bar. Taps include Hawkstone and Tennent's. Food centres on toasties, including the Loaded Haggis Melt. The main room has a parquet floor, tiled walls and a mix of art deco and traditional furnishings, and dogs are welcome there. Sky Sports shows football in both rooms. Upstairs, a second room has its own bar, a pool table and darts. It can be hired for groups of 40 to 45, or the whole pub can be taken over for an event.

Customer Review Summary
Tennent's on tap is the draw reviewers raise most, a rare find in London that several treat as reason enough to visit, and they repeatedly praise its reasonable price. Hawkstone and a stout come close behind, though one reviewer points out the Hawkstone is dearer than the Tennent's. Food gets less attention. One reviewer calls the toasties tasty and likes the sound of the Loaded Haggis Melt, while another describes the place as drinks only. Upstairs, a second bar has darts and pool, and one reviewer says it would suit a birthday. Others mention a student menu they find good value and the recent arrival of Sky Sports for watching football on a Saturday. Staff are described as friendly and welcoming, and the mood as atmospheric and cosy, with music at a reasonable volume, neither obnoxiously loud nor dead quiet. One reviewer returned a couple of weeks after a first visit, and another enjoys sitting at the outside tables in summer.

“Just off the beaten track (Tottenham Court Rd) Popped in for a totally random pint and was pleasantly surprised to find a friendly barman and half decent prices. £5 for a pint in London? I opted for a Hawkstone (dearer) but I wanted to see what the fuss was about. Really nice for a lager imo. Was quiet for a Sat evening which suits me and they had some interesting music at reasonable volume in the background. Will def return should I be passing and in need”

“A great pub - small but carefully curated selection of beers, prices are OK given the area, and the staff are nice. Lovely to sit outside on the tables during summer”

“🚇 Warren Street 🍺 £5.00 Tennent’s This pub is located just off Tottenham Court Road in Bloomsbury, Central London. The nearest Tube is Warren Street. Originally built as The Lord Wellington in 1827 and rebuilt in 1936, the pub was renamed The Jeremy Bentham in 1982. It later operated as a Simmons from 2017 to 2025 before reopening in October 2025 under Aldrich Inns, who restored its original name. It’s named after the 18th-century philosopher Jeremy Bentham, the “spiritual father” of nearby UCL. This is a traditionally decorated smallish pub which is set over two floors. The main bar is on the ground floor with the servery running along the back wall. Upstairs is a second bar/function room with an olschool pool table. The decor consists of parquet floor, wallpaper and metro tiles on the walls, comfortable seating, a couple of TVs, and a bold green ceiling, which creates a calm and intimate setting. There are benches at the front if you prefer to enjoy your beer alfresco. The beer selection was solid and offered a nice break from the norm, featuring beers from Hawkstone, Murphy’s stout, and cask ales. I went for a Tennent’s—a rare find in London—and it was excellent at just a fiver. Food-wise, it’s all about toasties, with a few options to choose from, all priced at £8.50. I like the sound of the Loaded Haggis Melt. I arrived just before 6pm on a Tuesday in March for an after-work pint. The pub was fairly busy, with students and staff from UCL, as well as local workers, enjoying an after-work tipple. The atmosphere was upbeat but also calm at the same time, thanks to the cosy nature of the pub. The service was great, and the team on duty were welcoming and friendly. This is a warm and inviting Bloomsbury boozer that was a joy to spend time in—so much so that I returned a couple of weeks later. I loved the traditional surroundings, the easygoing atmosphere, and a £5 pint in central London—nice touch. It’s great to see a pub reborn; this is a must-visit if you’re in the area. 📅 3rd March 2026”

Highlights
“The Jeremy Bentham is a historic pub in Bloomsbury, two minutes from UCL. Recently restored to its original name, after the philosopher whose auto-icon sits in a glass case up the road. Delicious pizzas, cooked to order: margherita, pepperoni and a few others. The taps are worth the walk: Guinness, Hawkstone, Tennent's, Lost & Grounded, DEYA, plus Lucky Saint for nights off. The football's on. Sky Sports in both rooms, most Premier League games. Students and NHS staff drink at £5 any day: pints, wine or cocktail cans. Just show a card. Cute kids are welcome till 5pm, dogs are welcome in the main room, and the benches out front fill up the minute the sun's out. Hire the function room upstairs for 40 to 45, or the whole pub. Get in touch.”
