About The Newman Arms
The Newman Arms is a pub in Fitzrovia, London, on Rathbone St, dating to 1730 and spread over three floors: a ground-floor main bar, a downstairs room and a Georgian panelled room upstairs. A separate pie room sits upstairs too. The food centres on pies, including a shepherd's pie and a veg mushroom pie served with gravy, plus a Scotch egg with a runny yolk. Big Penny keg beers are on tap, alongside two cask ales, one Fullers and one Timothy Taylor Landlord, and the wine list is extensive. A private dining room takes groups, and dogs are welcome. The pub is open Monday to Saturday and closed on Sundays. Small tables and chairs sit by the leaded windows, with a couple of stools at the bar.

Customer Review Summary
Pies draw the most praise at The Newman Arms, with reviewers calling out a rich shepherd's pie, a veg mushroom pie that left one diner wanting a second plate, and an upstairs pie room described as a highlight. The Scotch egg with a runny yolk is close behind, and one reviewer also points to an extensive wine list. Drinkers mention a Timothy Taylor Landlord ale and Big Penny lager, with a few noting how few cask ales are on tap. Reviewers describe a quirky, charming, cosy space spread over three floors, with a history that includes appearances in Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and welcoming, and one visitor was shown around the pub by the manager. One reviewer who visited earlier reports that no food was being served at that time, which contrasts with the pie-focused praise from later visits. Several describe returning for a second time, and one lunch visitor stopped in after the British Museum to find it not crowded, with small pies and half pints.

“This is a historic pub on Rathbone Street in Fitzrovia. Originally built in 1730, the pub has been serving locals for nearly 300 years now. Opening times are 12pm to 11pm (Mon to Sat), closed on Sundays. They have a ground floor indoor area, upstairs seating and outdoor standing space. Had a couple rounds here recently and really enjoyed the colourful pub and history. The Newman Arms is one of several enjoyable historic pubs in the area, definitely worth a try if pub crawling around the neighbourhood.”

“What a hidden gem! I was genuinely surprised that after living in London for so many years, I had never come across this place before. The pub has a wonderfully unique atmosphere that feels like stepping back into the era of Sherlock Holmes or an Agatha Christie novel. It's quirky, charming, and full of character, with a distinctly English feel that is becoming increasingly rare to find. The drinks were excellent, the vibe was warm and welcoming, and the whole experience felt special. I would highly recommend it to tourists, visitors, or anyone wanting to show friends and relatives from abroad a truly memorable and authentic side of London. A delightful and unusual place that is well worth a visit.”

“I had a Thimothy landlord ale, it was delicious. Only two cask on tap though it seems. The scotch egg was absolutely delicious with a runny egg yolk.”
