About Lore of the Land

On Conway St in Fitzrovia, London, Lore of the Land is a pub spread across three floors. Dogs are welcome downstairs, where smaller snack plates are served, and the restaurant sits upstairs with a skylight over the dining space. The Sunday roast comes with a choice of lamb, beef, pork or chicken, and combinations of meats are an option. Roast potatoes and gravy come alongside, and the pork roast arrives with crackling. The duck scotch egg is on the menu as a starter. A private function room is available for hire on the top of the three floors' offerings, which gives groups a space of their own for a gathering.

Customer Review Summary

Sunday roast is what reviewers raise most, with the pork, lamb and beef each singled out as tender and the pork praised for its crackling. The roast potatoes are called the star of the show, and the duck scotch egg and the Lore donut get mentions alongside them. Beyond the roast, diners name the monkfish, venison tartare, oysters, beef rib, pork loin and hake, with the Lore PA and Gritchie IPA among the drinks they enjoyed. Staff are described as friendly, accommodating and attentive, and one party hosting a private function praised the host. The caveats are specific. One diner found the lamb and beef a tad dry and the bone marrow oily without toast, and thought the family sharing platter was really a plate of meat. Another said service was inconsistent, with a grumpy server who was slow to take a drink order and curtly said an item was out, before a newer server turned the meal around. One reviewer thought an Irish coffee in a very small shot glass was expensive, and several suggest booking.

“Just had a lovely lunch on my own at this pub. Staff friendly and welcoming and made me feel relaxed. Food recommendations perfect. Would highly suggest coming here.”

“The bone marrow needed sone toast or biscuits as it was a little oily. The family sharing platter should have been described as a plate of meat as platter suggests a dish that’s a little bigger than a plate. The roast pork with crackling was good as were the roast potatoes. The roast lamb was a tad dry as was the beef but the taste was good”

“We celebrated my cousins 50th birthday there yesterday, she hired a private function room for the evening. Our host Roger was very attentive and accommodating and the waiting staff were all cheerful and friendly. The food was delicious and the drinks were reasonable priced. I will definitely visit again if I am in the area.”

“I was brought here for an anniversary dinner by surprise. The food was excellent; the monkfish, venison tartare and the oysters were the highlight. Whilst we'd initially been sat by someone who was a bit grumpy and took a long time to talk to us and take even a drink order once we were infact sat, alongside curtly saying 'we're out of that' when we enquired on a bottle on the menu giving us fears of poor service, this was thankfully rescued by the lovely Mattie who, despite it being her first shift in the dining room, was fantastic and entertaining and sorted us out very well for the rest of the meal once we'd ordered the main bulk of food from the rather miserable other waitress. I'd definitely reccomend coming, but bear in mind the service can be very inconsistent; I suspect this was down to them being understaffed.”

“Went in on a weekday afternoon and ended up loving everything about the place. The service was excellent, the food was familiar, yet different, the sun was streaming through the skylight and the Gritchie IPA helped round out a good lunch.”
