About The Edgar Wallace
The Edgar Wallace is a pub at 40 Essex St in London, with a ceiling covered in beer mats and pump clips and walls of vintage alcohol and tobacco adverts, plus a collection of smoking artifacts. The bar pours real ales on cask, including Harvey's Sussex Best and Landlord. The kitchen works through a menu of pub classics, and the cheese steak sandwich on sourdough comes with triple cooked chips. The pub spreads across two rooms over two floors, and a dining room sits upstairs for those who want a table for their meal.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers return most to the interior, which several liken to a museum: wall to wall vintage adverts, mainly for alcohol and cigarettes, with a ceiling covered in pump clips and beer mats. Diners describe craning their necks at the memorabilia, which also fills the upstairs dining room and the toilets. Close behind are the real ales, with Landlord and Sussex Best named most often, plus a few cask options on the bar. Food draws praise too, including the sausage and mash, a cheese steak sandwich on sourdough with triple cooked chips, and fish and chips, with portions called generous. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly, and one event with old soul, reggae and lovers rock is said to sell out fast. The main reservations are modest: one reviewer wishes the pub opened at weekends, and a couple remark that drinks cost the usual London prices. One first-time visitor says the people running the place made him feel like a valued regular.

“What a great boozer. Food is excellent, service second to none and they serve Sussex Best alongside Landlord. Couldn't fault the place. Highly recommend and worthy of 5*”

“I went to an event held at The Edgar Wallace and had a great time. Staff were quick to serve and friendly. A double brandy and mixer was £14 which for London is reasonable.”

“What a fantastic start to my friends birthday weekend celebrations. The music was spot on, in fact 11 out of 10 The vibes was excellent such a warm and family atmosphere. Even in this hot weather we were dancing non stop for over 3hrs. If you like old soul, reggae and a bit of lovers rock, this is a place to visit as a nice afternoon, early evening vibes as it finishes at 9pm. I will defo be going back when I can get tickets, as they sell out fast. Massive congratulations to this wonderful married duo for bringing this together.”

“Whilst staying in London for work I often go exploring of an evening, looking for somewhere to eat and have a nice pint of beer or two. This time I happened to stumble upon The Edgar Wallace. I like places that seem 'tucked away' off the beaten track, it feels like uncovering a secret. As soon as I walked in I knew I loved this place. They had on two of my favourites beers, Tim Taylor's 'Landlord' and Harvey's Best...so that was drinks sorted, and the food menu gave me a dilemma of which of the 'Classics' I would pick for supper. I'm not usually one for taking photos of food but when the Sausage n Mash that I ordered came I took a pic and sent it too my partner ...she agreed that it looked delicious...and it absolutely was. I plan on returning and working my way though the rest of the menu when I get the opportunity. As the other reviews mention, as soon as you walk in you are struck by the decor and ambience of the pub... I defy anyone to not find themselves craning their neck looking at the collection of memorabilia that line the walls and ceiling...quite something. For me though, on top of what I've mentioned above, the best thing was the way I was treated by the people who run the place. So friendly and charming...I'd never been there before but was spoken to and made to feel like I was a valued regular customer. If you get the chance then go there... you'll enjoy it.”

“Was walking the fleet street tour and myself/friends spotted this quirky looking venue on route! (And so delighted we did!) So pleased to have popped in, really unique decor and surroundings - we sadly didn't eat (as had a meal booked for the early eve) however appreciated the attention to detail in the menu with local quality produce keeping to a traditional English fayre! The drinks we had were good quality reasonably priced and the range available was decent. The staff were really lovely and found out it's an independent venue who's been lovingly ran for 16 years! Proper little boozer's with heart, history and soul are truly a part of the UKs charm so if you're in the area - absolutely pop in it's so worth a tasty drink and admiration! Will definitely return again if in the area.”

“The Edgar Wallace is a historic City of London pub tucked away just off Essex Street, known for its distinctive interior and relaxed, traditional atmosphere. The pub is famous for its extensive collection of vintage advertising, magazine covers, and historic memorabilia, creating a space that feels more like a living museum than a modern bar. We serve well-kept beers, including a rotating selection of real ales, alongside classic pub food. With no loud music and a calm, conversational setting, the Edgar Wallace is a place to enjoy a proper pint, good company, and a slower pace in the heart of the City.”
