About The Ship Tavern
The Ship Tavern is a pub on Gate St in Holborn, London, serving since 1549. The downstairs bar pours Old Peculier dark ale on tap alongside a variety of other beers. Upstairs, the Oak Dining Room is the restaurant, so a drink at the bar and a sit-down meal each have their own floor. The Sunday Roast offers beef, pork belly and a Wellington for two. The Butchers Board brings roast lamb, beef and pork with sauces and trimmings. The pub is open daily.

Customer Review Summary
Sunday roast is what most reviewers come for, served in the upstairs Oak Dining Room. Diners praise the Butchers Board of roast lamb, beef and pork with sauces for each meat, the beef with horseradish, the fluffy Yorkshire pudding and generous gravy, and a Wellington for two. One pair returned for a second roast before leaving London. Close behind is the sticky toffee pudding, described as rich, gooey and not too sweet. Others single out the padron peppers, scallops, gnocchi, lemon sole and a gigantic fish and chips, with a burger also getting praise. Old Peculier is recommended with the roast, and one reviewer says it beats Guinness. Reviewers call the staff friendly and welcoming, and several describe an authentic, traditional pub atmosphere. One suggests booking because it gets busy. One finds the food a bit pricey for some. Another notes a malfunctioning food lift, yet the staff still seated and served them efficiently, and one couple had their 25th anniversary celebrated by the team.

“I have no idea how we stumbled upon this place, but I'm so glad we did. There was an after-work crowd standing outside but we were still able to get a table upstairs. Drinks were great! We had a lite bite to eat and enjoyed that as well. Overall, authentic London experience, exactly what we were looking for during our stay.”

“What a delightful afternoon Sunday Roast. While you may have to explore a bit to find it, this historic tavern is not to be missed. The dinner upstairs in the Oak Room was delicious and the staff were amazing. Even with the large crowd, we were pampered and well taken care of. They were all friendly and helpful with our first British Sunday Roast experience. Explaining the meal and suggesting a wonderful ale to accompany it. They even celebrated our 25th anniversary with us. We will definitely mark this as a not to be missed experience in London.”

“A hidden gem. A historic treasure tucked away right behind Holborn station! The atmosphere, the service, the food, the history are absolutely amazing. The padron peppers were heavenly. The bread was hot and fresh, and the fish'n'chips were gigantic and, quite simply, flawless. Being here made me feel like a fairytale hero. 10/10 will come again!”
