Quick info
About The Bread & Roses
The Bread & Roses is a pub on Clapham Manor Street in London, run by Workers Beer Company with a theatre upstairs staging plays and peculiar acts. A performance area at the back hosts live music, poetry, and karaoke nights, backed by a sound person on hand for events. The bar pours both keg and cask beer, and snack-sized plates include the lobster roll, truffle mac and cheese, and chicken biscuit. Outdoor seating runs front and back, with canopy umbrellas at the front and a beer garden at the rear, and dogs are welcome throughout. The step-free, wheelchair-accessible entrance suits visitors with mobility needs, and food is also available as takeaway for those eating off site. The pub opens daily, and reservations are recommended given the mix of dining, drinking, and events under one roof. It sits a short walk from Clapham North station.

Customer Review Summary
Live music and the theatre upstairs form the biggest draw at this Clapham pub, with reviewers repeatedly mentioning bands, karaoke nights, burlesque, poetry, and other acts happening most nights. Close behind is the drinks and food offering: several call out the beer garden and outdoor seating, and named dishes include the lobster roll, truffle mac and cheese, chicken biscuit, and a steak and chips described as cooked perfectly with chunky chips. Staff are generally described as polite and attentive, even during busy events, though one reviewer found them unprepared for a rush and noted messy toilets with an unusable cubicle. A more serious complaint comes from a band that played the venue, describing poor email communication, an events organiser who gave no warning about a broken drum kit or sound man delays, and no management presence on the night, though the reviewer notes a written apology was later received. Most other visitors describe a warm, community feel, with several saying it's their regular spot in the area.

“The Bread & Roses is a distinctive community pub on Clapham Manor Street with a strong neighbourhood identity. My overall experience was very positive and fully deserved the five-star rating I gave it. It is a characterful local venue and a valuable part of the Clapham community, with an atmosphere that stands apart from a standard high-street pub.”

“Great band and great food, once the chef arrived!!”

“This is from the perspective of a band that was booked to play. I also sourced and liaised with the support bands, so very little for the management to do. The first thing you noticed was how long it took for the pub to reply to emails, and in many cases didn't reply at all, or replied with incorrect information like they had misread what you sent them. I arrived at the venue at 4pm. The sound man arrived at 5pm. I was assured via phone call with an organiser, it would be fine to do a long sound check, but it ended up that none of the three bands booked could. The entire sound check time was taken up with setting up, and fixing the drum kit, which had a broken hi hat stand. Eventually fixed by myself and my singer. Apparently the sound man could have arrived earlier but was not informed of extra time needed for the extra work. I had spoken to the events organiser who gave me no hint of there being any possible problem, even though he knew the kit (electronic kit) had been packed down and the sound man wouldn't be arriving at the specified time. Neither of the organisers made an appearance on the night and it was left to the sound man/bar staff and myself to run the night. In the end we actually managed to have a good night, despite the lack of professionalism from the management. We even managed to pull randoms off the street, drawn in by the music, who insisted on paying even though the night was nearly over. Every problem could have been avoided, or fixed before hand with honest communication. It felt like the management didn't care at all about this event. Disappointing, disorganised and unprofessional. Ashame for what could be a decent venue if they sorted out the management. I have since received a written apology which is better than nothing. Boo to the management at The Bread & Roses pub.”

“What a lovely pub. It has a great performance area downstairs, a theatre upstairs. A good ear friendly sound, there was a sound person on hand. A short but pleasant stroll from Clapham North. Food was basic but fine and filled a gap. Good salad.”
