About Hop Pole

Hop Pole is a pub at 64 Putney Bridge Rd in Wandsworth, London, a couple of minutes from Wandsworth Park and the town centre. The kitchen pairs a Thai menu with classic pub food, so a Massaman curry or a pad Thai can sit on the same table as the usual pub plates. Chicken satay rounds out the Thai side for those who want something lighter to share. The setting is a typical English pub, and the bar keeps Guinness on offer alongside a selection of other beers.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers come most often for the Thai menu at this English pub, with the Chicken Massaman curry, laksa and pad Thai named as highlights, and one visitor saying the Thai was better than the beer. Close behind is the Guinness, called smooth and beautiful by two diners, and several describe a friendly welcome and a local feel, including a crowd gathered for rugby on the big screens. A few mention warm, speedy, chatty service. The green curry and massaman curry also earn praise, though the same reviewer found the chicken satay and fish cakes disappointing and not very fresh, and another found the chicken a bit dry. The harshest accounts are about the front of house and the kitchen. One diner describes a cheeseburger with a wet bun dripping in oil, dirt on the lettuce, a chip substitution ignored and another table's dish served to their friend. Another reports the owner having an attitude and shouting "who the **** are you looking at" near the end of a visit. Prices draw mixed comments, with beers described as expensive by one reviewer and food as reasonably priced by another.

“We went to this place for some drinks, food and to watch the World Cup match. The beers were quite expensive around £7.50 each but this is not crazy due to the area that the pub is located. My main concern stems from the food and lack of service from staff. My friends and I all ordered food. To begin, my friends dish was given to another table and another dish brought to the table. The server explained that his food had been given away to another table and asked if he would accept the dish in her hands instead. My friend, being socially awkward and diagnosed neurodivergent, accepted this as to avoid conflict. My partner ordered no.46 and said that he was rather happy with his order. I, on the other hand, was not. I ordered a cheeseburger and it came with a wet bun, dripping in oil. I asked for my chips to be substituted to fries as I am not a fan of thick chips. This was not adhered too. The cheeseburger itself was not nice at all, I only ate 1/4 of it before I gave up and drank beer to fill the hunger instead. The salad they gave me came with the lettuce butt and dirt on the lettuce. Please avoid the ketchup in the packet as it is just liquid!! I would have expected a higher standard from a 4.6 rated venue. Personally, I would not return to have food, but would come for a quick drink.”

“A place I’ve visited a handful of times due to ease of location. Unfortunately, the owner was on shift who I found to to have an attitude the whole time, and near the end of our visit, shouted “who the **** are you looking at” when trying to catch my partners attention. Expensive prices for a mediocre pub and don’t expect the owner to be happy you’re there.”

“The marriage of English pub & Thai food! On a lazy Sunday afternoon, we happened upon Hop Pole, where you get to eat great Thai food while you enjoy a good beer in a typical English pub setting. The Laksa was awesome and the pad Thai delicious. Our only complaint, the chicken was a bit dry, but still fresh. Reasonably priced food and a good, but typical, selection of beers, what more can one ask for? Way to go Hop Pole, keep on keeping on!”
