Quick info
About Big Red
On Holloway Rd, Big Red is a bar and pub that also serves food, built around a jukebox and a run of live band nights and music fairs. Pool tables and a foosball table sit at the back, with booths in the corners for seating. The food menu stays small, running to chicken wings and sharing platters. It opens daily, evenings only, with last orders around 1:45am ahead of a 2am close. Door staff carry out ID checks and enforce a dress code against tracksuit bottoms. Reservations are recommended. A step-free, wheelchair-accessible entrance serves visitors with mobility needs.

Customer Review Summary
Door security and entry policy dominate the recent complaints at Big Red, with reviewers describing being turned away over dress code inconsistencies, including one account of a friend refused entry in tracksuit bottoms despite the group having no confrontation, another describing a security guard who cited "too much to drink" after a single drink, and one reviewer alleging discriminatory treatment tied to nationality and a separate account tied to football allegiance. Several also report being shut out near closing despite advertised hours, with pool games cut short around 1:20am or service refused around 1am. Staff experiences are mixed: multiple reviewers single out one bartender or the "lady behind the bar" as welcoming, while others cite a manager or a female bouncer as rude and one describes being overcharged twice with no refund and served a dish containing sauce despite an allergy request. On the positive side, the pool tables, foosball, and booth seating draw repeat mentions, along with the sound system and live bands, and one reviewer praises the chicken wings with choosable flavors. Food and cocktails are inconsistently available, with a few noting no kitchen running at all.

“Avoid avoid avoid. Bag snatchers operate in the area. Had my bag stolen on a Tuesday evening. Asked the staff about it who weren’t interested.”

“Advertised until 2am on a Sunday night, turned up at 1:15 and told it was wrong on Google and they were closed. An absolute shame as this place 12 years ago and was an amazing dive bar. Somethings gone wrong.”

“I came here around 4 months ago and got abused by the security, it was an awful experience. They told us we can’t come in because we’re not wearing jeans, I then got an uber home that came back and put on jeans. When me and my friend arrived back with jeans (0 confrontational energy from us) we got told “you can’t come back in because you was here initially in tracksuit bottoms”, in what world does that make sense? That was my first awful experience which made me not want to come back. 4 months later I come again, regrettably. I’m playing pool, I asked the barmaid when do they close. She said 2am and last orders are at 1.45am. At 1.20am a “closed” sign is thrown on our pool table randomly, (during the game) I ask what that is about (looking at the time) she said it’s just the rules and she wants to go home??? She just said 1.45 is the last order. We finished the game and asked if we can play 1 more, to the right of us they just started a game and was told they can, she then said we can’t, makes no sense what so ever ever. Complete jobsworth. Every time I come here, I have an awful experience. I believe in second chances, but I will not be back.”

“loudest bar i’ve ever been in, enjoyed playing pool tho”

“Weirdly dead when I visited. Heard about this place for years and it has an amazing feel. Back in the day must have been amazing but sadly the lack of nightlife generally amongst youth means this great venue fell flat. Service was great but this is a rock dive bar that has lost its energy. Sad times.”
