About Stokes High Bridge Café

Stokes High Bridge Café is a cafe in Lincoln at 207-209 High St, set in a Tudor building dating from 1540 on the medieval High Bridge over the River Witham. It is the only medieval bridge in England with houses still standing on it, so a visit here means eating and drinking inside a period interior. Upstairs on the first floor, window seats look over the high street, the river and the canal. Breakfast includes eggs benedict with salmon, and the scones are served warm. Tea arrives as a pot with a tea leaf strainer, and freshly squeezed orange juice is on the drinks list. Coffee can be made with alternative milks, and iced versions of drinks are available. Bags of coffee beans are sold to take home.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the coffee, describing the beans as rich and smooth, with the Blue Mountain blend and bags of beans to take home getting a mention, alongside iced drinks and a good choice of alternative milks. Close behind are the scones, called warm, soft and flaky, and cake, including a lemon and blueberry slice, plus tea served properly with a leaf strainer. Breakfast draws praise too, with eggs benedict with salmon, a tostie, tomato soup and freshly squeezed orange juice named as highlights. Several enjoyed the upstairs window seats looking over the high street, river and Brayford, and describe the old interior as feeling like going back in time. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and welcoming. The main caveat is space and pace: one reviewer found service a little slow on a busy Saturday afternoon, and another noted there is not a great amount of room. One reviewer with a mobility scooter had a table found and the scooter parked beside it.

“A lovely old cafe/restaurant set in the perfect location. The food is definitely a step up on a normal coffee shop. We had a fabulous Tostie and lovely soup. We came back a few days later and had a high quality breakfast. One of the real stand outs was the freshly squeezed orange juice. It’s so fresh and sweet.”

“Beautiful, quaint, historical setting. The lemon and blueberry cake was delicious and the pot of tea really hit the spot. The only downside was service was a little slow, however it was a Saturday afternoon, so to be expected. The staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly.”

“I visited Stokes with my mum for her Birthday, the only thing she fancied was homemade tomato soup and wow did Stokes deliver! We were greeted by a beautifully presented lady, Hayley, who promptly sat us at a window seat upstairs, which looks over the high street and river. Great for a spot of people watching! She was so calm and polite we already felt right at home. We asked our waitress Beth, full of smiles and knowledge, what the soup of the day was and to mums delight her wish of the day had been granted!! Emily checked to make sure we were satisfied and of course we were. Thank you to all the staff for making us feel so welcome!”
  • Peter Thompson
“We only stopped for a coffee & cake so did not go upstairs. Its a lovely coffee shop which also sells the beans themselves. Everything was really good, not a great amount of space and service was great and friendly - they were very busy!”

Highlights

“Click the latch of our beautiful Tudor High Bridge Café for a taste of the Stokes Way of life. The High Bridge, built over the River Witham circa 1160 is the only Medieval bridge in England with houses still upon it, and our unique building has been standing tall since 1540. Take time to enjoy this historic building in its full glory with a jolly good brew, and maybe a bite to eat too.”
