Customer Review Summary
Sunday roast is what most reviewers come for, with diners praising the portions, the medium-rare beef and puddings like the sticky toffee pudding with generous custard and a homemade apple crumble. Close behind are the beers and real ales, plus a Mai Tai one guest called perfect. Others mention juicy chicken burgers, fish and chips, and Lincolnshire sausages and mash, though one found the gravy watery. The garden with heated huts also gets praise, and one reviewer notes Sunday roasts require a reservation.

“I wasn’t expecting Michelin-star dining in Leicester, but I certainly wasn’t expecting one of the worst pub experiences I’ve ever had. From the moment we walked in, the staff were unbelievably rude. Calling them unfriendly would be an understatement. They came across as dismissive, arrogant and completely uninterested in making customers feel welcome. As two foreigners, we genuinely felt out of place in what seemed to be an environment catering almost exclusively to the local crowd. Whether intentional or not, that was certainly the impression we were left with. We came specifically for the Sunday roast, hoping to enjoy a traditional British meal. Unfortunately, it was genuinely awful. It honestly made me wonder how people can eat food of such poor quality. Everything lacked flavour, and the standard was far below what I would expect even from an average pub. The cauliflower cheese was perhaps the biggest disappointment. It looked and tasted as though someone had simply poured watered-down milk over the cauliflower. There was virtually no cheese flavour whatsoever—just a bland, runny sauce with no richness or texture. Poor food can sometimes be forgiven if the service is warm and welcoming. Terrible service might be overlooked if the food is exceptional. Here, unfortunately, both were equally disappointing. Without question, one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had in the UK. I certainly won’t be returning, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone looking for a decent Sunday roast or even basic hospitality.”

“A great place to gather, eat and make new friends... The Sunday Roast was perfect and the portions wow... Thank you Poppy and Cerys for the amazing kind and fun service... Sunday Roasts require a reservation, they'll do everything possible to accommodate but play it safe...”

“I am an American traveling in Europe, and I just got to Leicester at suppertime and just wandered down to the city center looking for fish and chips and a "proper" English pub. It was like a fairy granted my wish. The building is gorgeous, the inside makes you feel as if you belong there (and is also gorgeous), the staff also make you feel like you belong there. So kind! And I tried so hard to finish all that food. My mouth wanted more, but I was not up to the task. If you ever find yourself in Leicester, don't miss this place!”

“We visited recently as we were heading to a show at DeMontfort Hall nearby. A lovely warm welcome from the team who showed us to our table as we had booked in advance. The food was hot and delicious and the cocktails were amazing. I love Rum and their Mai Tai was perfect! My friend had the Fish and Chips and I went for the Mushroom & Lentil Lasagne. You can't beat a good Sticky Toffee Pudding either. Will definitely return, especially because the service was so smooth even though it was very busy.”

“Had dinner here after walking past it in the afternoon. Looked online at the menu and went back. Great selection of beers, almost a one pub 'Pub crawl'. Settled on the Lincolnshire sausages and mash with a side of onion rings. Food was good, mash was bang on but only giving a 4* as the gravy was a touch watery and I believe it should be a thick onion gravy. All washed down with a decent pint. £26-65 all in, onion rings a bit steep at £4-95 but overall good meal and good service.”

“Sitting in Leicester city centre, the Marquis Wellington is a haven for the ‘real pub’ goers. The historic building houses a cosy interior with vintage fittings, and a raft of real ales, great wines and local beers. A menu of hearty good food will tempt the most discerning foodies, whilst the large beer garden is perfect for families and groups of professionals alike, thanks to four new individually-heated beach huts. The Marquis Wellington is a step away from the usual stainless steel city centre bar. It’s a place to relax, talk and enjoy great food and drink. What more could you want.”
