About Lans coffee

Lans coffee is an independent coffee shop on Harrogate Road in Leeds, where orders go in at the counter and no booking is needed. Drinks come in sit-in cups by default, so it pays to say at the point of ordering if you want yours to go, since takeaway cups and lids are not handed out to customers sitting in. Espresso-based drinks, flat whites among them, anchor the counter, with a cookie served with ice cream on the food side. Vegan choices include a vegan sandwich and a vegan Oreo cake. The owner works alongside the team serving customers. An outdoor seating area gives an option for those who would rather sit outside, dogs are welcome, and high chairs make the room workable for families with young children. A step-free entrance keeps access straightforward for visitors with mobility needs. The shop opens daily.

Customer Review Summary

Coffee is the draw that recurs most, with regulars singling out the cappuccino, the flat white and an iced coffee one visitor rates the best they have had. Close behind is the warm cookie served with ice cream, named by more than one reviewer, and others point to the vegan Oreo cake, a vegan sandwich on bread one visitor raved about, and the cannoli. Several describe friendly greetings, easy chats with the owner and a relaxed, cosy feel, with the outdoor seating praised on a sunny day. Two accounts run counter to this. One describes being refused a takeaway cup while sitting in, told there was a cup shortage, and met with the reply that questions did not have to be answered, ending in a refund request and an apology from a younger staff member. Another reports a long wait for three drinks, a trainee barista left unsupported, and a sit-in order that could not be lidded for takeaway. One reviewer notes a mix-up the owner insisted on putting right.

“I usually really enjoy visiting Lans when I’m in the area or after a run. It’s normally a great local spot, and the owner is always lovely when she’s working; we usually have a nice chat, which really adds to the experience. Unfortunately, today felt quite different. It took a while to be served, and it looked like one of the baristas was still in training. That in itself isn’t an issue at all, everyone has to learn, but it didn’t seem like she had much support. The other barista didn’t appear to step in or guide her much, and seemed to spend more time chatting, which made the service feel a bit disorganised. There wasn’t a queue ahead of me or behind me, but it still took around 15–20 minutes for three drinks to be made. The order was also wrong, as I’d asked for takeaway but the drinks were made in sit-in cups. They then had to be poured into takeaway cups, but there were no lids available that fitted the flat white cups. I’ve also noticed a couple of other recent reviews mentioning similar concerns around wrong orders, baristas not paying attention, and simple orders taking longer than expected. I only mention this because Lans is usually nice little local spot, and it would be a shame for the service to slip when the atmosphere and coffee are normally so good. Hopefully this was just an off day, but a few small improvements would make a big difference; especially making sure newer staff are properly supported, keeping an eye on customers coming in and out, double-checking whether orders are takeaway or sit-in, and ensuring the correct lids and cups are available. I think I’d pay another visit in the future, as I’ve had lots of good experiences at Lans, but today didn’t quite reflect the usual standard. Hope the feedback is taken on board.”

“Lovely coffee shop with the best iced coffee I’ve had. The service from the members of staff and the owners are very lovely. This is now my regular coffee shop I go to which is a massive upgrade from what I usually used to get from Costa and Cafe Nero.”

“Every now and then I’ll come in for a coffee and they always make it perfectly. Probably the best cappuccino I’ve had. The staff always greet you with a smile on their face and the place has a nice relaxed atmosphere if you want to eat/drink in :)”

“I had a very similar experience regarding the takeaway cups. On my second coffee of the day, I returned to order again and attempted to reuse my takeaway cup from earlier, but was told I could not have a takeaway cup if I was sitting in. I mentioned that I prefer a lidded takeaway cup due to a health issue, without going into detail, but the response I received was abrupt and unhelpful. During the interaction, I was told there was a shortage of takeaway cups. I felt reusing my previous cup was a reasonable option. I only asked about the shortage out of interest, and to try to diffuse what had become an awkward interaction, but was told, “I don’t have to answer your questions.” The whole exchange felt unnecessarily hostile. The staff behind the counter appeared visibly uncomfortable, which says a lot in itself. The way it was handled came across as dismissive, unprofessional, and completely lacking in basic customer care. It gave the impression of someone running a business without understanding that customers are the reason it exists and the investor that put her there. Anyone who has actually put the effort into building something knows how important it is to treat people properly, and that was clearly missing here. I ultimately asked for a refund due to the way I was spoken to. As I was leaving, a younger member of staff apologised for what I can only assume was the owner’s behaviour, which reflects poorly on management. I have since noticed similar comments in other reviews, so this does not appear to be an isolated incident. Based on my experience, the issue is not the product, but the way customers are treated. I must say the young team there were lovely and showed this silly lady up. Avoid corner House a few doors down is far more friendly.”
