About Little Hunan

Little Hunan is a Chinese restaurant at 51 Surbiton Rd in Kingston Upon Thames, serving Hunan and Sichuan style cooking, with seating downstairs near Kingston University. The chef prepares Sichuan preserved chicken and pork ribs in house. The spicy numbing stir fry lets a table choose its own ingredients, typically four, and arrives as a large dish to share. Beef noodles are also on the menu. Dishes marked spicy are very spicy, and non-spicy options sit alongside them. The kitchen is open daily, and the desserts and fruit teas are made by hand. Payment is cash only, and a Sainsbury cash point is about a 3 minute walk away.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often praise the authentic, non-westernised Sichuan and Hunan cooking, with the beef noodles singled out by more than one reviewer. Close behind is the "spicy numbing" stir fry, where diners choose about four ingredients and share one large dish. Reviewers also name the fragrant fish aubergine, the vegetable noodles, the sweet and sour chicken and the fish. One reviewer who has returned about five times found every dish full of flavour. Dishes marked spicy are described as very hot, though non-spicy options are available. Takeaway orders are said to arrive quickly and well packaged, with free prawn crackers. The most lukewarm account came from a diner who found the roast duck and sizzling beef only ok, the Singapore noodles average and the wraps not homemade, and who noted the soju is a very strong 56% Chinese rice wine. Staff and the owner are repeatedly called friendly, and one birthday table was given a free traditional Chinese dessert and a coconut juice.

“Ordered a takeaway to home, came within 30 mins and the owner who greeted us was lovely! Very cheerful and appreciative of the order. Food was brilliant, great variance of options on the menu and all were great. Particularly the sweet and sour chicken and beef noodles. Great place all round! Highly recommend, best Chinese takeaway I’ve had.”

“This is a great Chinese takeaway in the area. The delivery times are reasonable and the meals are well packaged. The food very nice, and the portion sizes are generous for the price. You also get free prawn crackers - a major bonus! I would definitely recommend ordering from this restaurant.”

“It was my birthday yesterday and me and my family went here last night, we had reserved a table for 6:15 but we reached late (6:45) and they were totally understanding, the food was absolutely amazing, we had ordered salt and pepper chicken, salt and pepper squids, chicken fried rice, chicken fried noodles, duck fried noodles and Singapore fried noodles, with some drinks. The food was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, honestly perfect, even the service was incredibly fast, our food arrived really quick and the atmosphere was amazing. They have such good hospitality! She gave us a traditional Chinese dessert for free because it was my birthday (she is soo sweet) and the dessert was perfect as well! She also gave me a coconut juice which was so nice and refreshing! This place is a must if you haven’t tried already! Amazing people and amazing food, 10/10 💖”

“Delicious, authentic Chinese food in the Kingston area. I’ve been coming here for a few years now and the quality has been consistently good. Prices are reasonable and the service is always friendly. Please note that they only take cash here. There is a Sainsbury cash point about 3 min walk from the restaurant.”

“Recently I have been to a number of Chinese restaurants and Little Hunan is my new favourite. Going on a Monday lunchtime I expected it to empty but it was nearly full and the two women running the place were both really friendly. The food was full of flavour and the fish was particularly good. It’s only about 35 minutes from home so now I’ve found it I plan to return! Update : I’ve now returned about five times and each time I enjoy it more. Every dish I’ve tasted has been fantastic and full of flavour and interest. This is so far away from the typical food you get in your local Chinese restaurant. Try it; you will love it.”
