About Poor Boys
Poor Boys is an American restaurant at Unit 5 in Kingston Upon Thames, built around New Orleans po' boys sandwiches. Fried chicken leads the menu, served as southern chicken with sides or inside a Poor Boy, and Cajun mayo and buttermilk ranch come as dips with it. Beef brisket also appears, including in a brisket sandwich, for anyone who wants a different filling. Mac and cheese is on offer as a southern bowl or as mac and cheese balls. Dessert rounds out the short menu. The restaurant takes walk-ins, and dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Fried chicken is the draw most reviewers return to, described as well flavoured and never dry, whether in the southern chicken, a po' boy, or dipped in hot honey, buttermilk ranch or Cajun mayo. The mac and cheese comes close behind, praised as creamy without being overloaded with cheese. Jalapeño poppers, burnt ends brisket, gravy fries, fried pickles and buttermilk shrimp also earn praise. Portions are repeatedly called massive, and several diners took leftovers home. The brisket draws mixed reactions, with one reviewer finding the po' boy meat cold and lacking flavour and another calling it a little dry. One diner found most of the food greasy, with the fried pickles swimming in it. Queues at peak hours come up often, and one reviewer suggests outside tables for a shorter wait. Two diners flag a discretionary service charge added to the bill, and one missed having dessert. One reviewer notes the takeaway chicken stays crispy rather than going soggy.

“This was my second time visiting, and once again I ended up taking food home because the portions are so generous and filling! The mac and cheese is absolutely amazing, and the buttermilk shrimp was delicious. The milkshakes and drinks were also lovely. One member of our party felt the beef brisket was a little dry, and while the fried pickles were plentiful, they were unfortunately swimming in grease. That was probably my main criticism overall — aside from the mac and cheese (which obviously needs to be creamy!), I found most of the food quite greasy. It was a shame because the flavours and portions were otherwise really good. It is on the pricey side, but the portion sizes definitely make it feel worthwhile. The servers were all lovely, friendly and welcoming too. Overall, I enjoyed the meal and would come back again, but I really hope they can cut back on the amount of grease, as that would make a big difference.”

“I went here a while ago and I was blown away with so many aspects. First of all the staff were amazing and friendly. They made you feel like your a regular at their establishment. They met us outside and brought us in. The atmosphere felt lovely and cosy. Secondly their portion sizes are crazy. I mean just look at their mac and cheese balls! I really enjoyed the burnt ends brisket, I think they were cooked really well and their gravy fries were my all time fave. Overall the flavours were really good. It is out of my way in terms of location but I will definitely be going there again in the near future.”

“One of the best spots for seriously tasty fried chicken. The dips are what make it stand out—my favourites are the buttermilk ranch and Cajun mayo. Getting a table without a booking can be tough, and since they’re usually busy, service can be a bit hit or miss. I’d recommend going for takeaway instead—there’s no wait, the packaging is solid, and the chicken stays crispy rather than going soggy. Win-win. Still a top place for fried chicken.”

“Had an incredible dining experience at Poor Boys. The food was absolutely delicious—everything we ordered was packed with flavor, perfectly cooked, and served fresh. From the crispy fried chicken and loaded sides to the tender ribs and burnt ends, every dish was a winner. The portions were generous and perfect for sharing. The lively atmosphere made the experience even better. A special thank you to Kim and Archie, who provided exceptional service throughout our visit. They were warm, attentive, friendly, and made us feel genuinely welcome from the moment we arrived. Their recommendations were spot on, and they checked on us regularly without being intrusive. Kim and Archie’s excellent customer service truly elevated our experience and made the meal even more memorable. We’ll definitely be back the next time we’re in Kingston. Highly recommended!”

“Visited today and had the best time ever. The food was amazing. I have always wanted to try new orleans inspired soul food and when I researched to find one around me, I found this gem! Originally we wanted to go in December but after Christmas shopping the line was really long and the wait was around 1.5 hours so we left it. This time we decided to get there for 12pm (when they open) on a Saturday. We managed to get a table inside fairly quickly. I got the southern mac and cheese bowl with cajun mayo and it was delicious. The mac and cheese was really tasty and not overpowering/cheesy like some can be. The portion of chicken was massive, but each piece was cooked thoroughly and properly. We ordered some starters (even though these aren't necessary as the portion sizes for mains are great), we got the jalapeño poppers (nice mix of spicy and cheesy) and corn ribs. The portion sizes were a great value for money, I took my food home as I couldn't finish it and had it for dinner! Two things to note - inside is quite small and tables are close together. And there is a discretionary service fee added to the bill. Overall, it was a great place, would definitely visit again ☺️”
