Quick info
About The Old Kings Head
The Old Kings Head is a pub on Stock Rd in Ingatestone that welcomes dogs, with water and a bonio provided for them. The kitchen serves a Sunday roast with beef, chicken or lamb, and carrot mash comes alongside. A chicken, ham and leek pie is also on the food side. Drinks come with table service, and the bar is short, so staff direct you to find a table. A rear garden has its own garden bar. Upstairs, a private area is set aside for parties, which suits groups. A bus stop for Billericay sits right outside.

Customer Review Summary
The Sunday roast draws the most mentions, with reviewers describing a hot, good-sized plate and singling out the carrot mash as a highlight for one family. Close behind is the chicken, ham and leek pie, called excellent by one regular, while starters like roast French onion soup and a beetroot and walnut tart, plus desserts such as a lemon bavarois, also earn praise. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly and lovely, and the refurbished interior is noted for its high standard. Food quality draws more mixed comments. One diner found the roast plates not hot enough, the mash runny and the extra stuffing tasting like bought-in sausage meat, and another found the burger underwhelming. Others mention wrong dishes being brought and bill confusion, and one notes long waits for table service in the garden because the bar is short. Dog owners mention water and a biscuit being brought for their dog, and one family received a small bunch of daffodils on Mother's Day.

“Nice country pub on the road between Billericay and Stock in Essex. The food has good ambition but quality was variable the three times I've eaten there - the burger particularly underwhelming. Enthusiastically priced menu, too. The pub has an unusually short bar and as a result you're directed to find a table to be served drinks by staff. Fine in theory but if you're in the (nice and spacious) rear garden you may find you wait longer than you'd wish with empty glasses, hoping for table service. There's a really attractive garden bar, though, which may mitigate this service issue. It wasn't open on a Sunday afternoon in July - perhaps because the pub was quiet. Overall a decent boozer.”

“Been to this lovely old pub quite a few times. My last visit I had the chicken, ham and leek pie...it was excellent! One of the best pies I've had in years! The staff are lovely and friendly too. The OKH has become our place to go for a delicious hearty meal with a nice easy atmosphere any time of the week.”

“We recently celebrated our 40th Wedding Anniversary at the Old King's Head. We hosted 20 family and friends in a private area upstairs. Staff were friendly and professional, nothing was too much for them. Everyone agreed that the food was amazing. The waiter done an excellent job of taking everyone's order while we were all standing and moving around talking; he didn't miss anyone out and got our orders perfectly. Staff were continuously up and down the stairs taking and delivering our drink orders. We had a wonderful evening. A big thank you to all the staff!”

“We have driven past so many times, but decided the sun was out, let’s walk here from Billericay. A really good call as it’s a great pub and restaurant. As usual, it’s the staff that make a place, they are truly lovely. Not tried the food yet, but will be back to do so, soon. Secret advantage is that the bus stop back to Billericay is right outside! Trust me, well worth a visit!”
