About Dukes Head Billericay

On Laindon Common Road in Billericay, Dukes Head Billericay is a gastropub serving a Modern British menu across a dining room, a conservatory, and a bar area with no door separating it from the restaurant. The garden seating stretches to both front and back, with a pond stocked with fish giving the outdoor tables their focal point. A fireplace sits inside for cooler days, and a private dining room is available for groups. The bar area welcomes dogs, and a step-free entrance suits visitors with mobility needs, while high chairs make the room workable for families with young children. Live music or a DJ features on some evenings. The Sunday roast is served in large portions, and a chocolate brownie rounds out the dessert options. Reservations are recommended, and takeaway and delivery are offered for those eating off site. Every table starts with a bottle of cold tap water.

“I took my husband for his birthday, we was taken through to the Restaurant then passed all the other empty tables then put into another part facing The Duchess, there was a party with a DJ, very loud, this was supposed to be a lovely meal for my husband’s birthday with our family. This was not the experience I wanted for my husband. The food was ok, but definitely not great service it was very slow.”

“The food was amazing. Great roast, Yorkshire pudding and Mac and cheese. Wish the potatoes were crispier 😂 Service was a bit slow but you can tell that the girl managing out table was running around like a headless chicken. Nothing bad about her. Parking is a bit of a git though. Will definitely go again.”

“I would rate this place a 10/10 on every scale possible. Something I was most impressed by was how brilliant everything was and they didn’t add on a service charge. I am always one to pay a service charge but I don’t believe in tipping on top of one and Dukes Head is one of the first places I’ve been to where I was able to make my own tip. I tipped 20% of my meal as everything was absolutely brilliant. The food was high quality and in a reasonable portion for the price, I got the Half chicken with gravy and chips and the only thing i’d say is that the gravy wasn’t as thick as i’d like it. Everything was perfectly salted which i can never usually find in a restaurant. The service was absolutely superb and I was very impressed with it. At one point I asked where the toilets were while standing next to them and they kept their smiles and just directed me to them. As someone who has worked in the industry before I know that most people wouldn’t have been as nice. The highlight of my meal was definitely the desserts. i’ve been to many similar places and I have not had a good quality hot brownie in a long time. I wish I could write in experience to what I usually do at restaurants which is to modify the meal and I’m quite a picky eater but this place is 100% picky eater friendly”

Service is exceptional Sadie, Jared and Harley brilliant, friendly and know the menu well to give great tips and guidance when you’re unsure. Always a pleasure to see when we visit. Atmosphere is chilled out and music to all tastes. We come here over anywhere else it is our go to restaurant/pub and have recommended to so many family and friends.”

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the Sunday roast and the desserts, especially a hot brownie, as the strongest draws, with the apple tart and lemon tart also praised on a birthday visit and the crispy onion rings called some of the best diners have had. Fish and chips and dishes like the lamb loin, pork and scallops, and king prawn, chorizo and scallop linguine also come up favourably, and several note friendly, attentive table service. Recurring trouble spots pull the experience down for some: one reviewer describes a buttermilk chicken burger with an overcooked bun and dry chicken alongside a burned brownie, another reports being repeatedly told listed wines like Whispering Angel and Bijou were unavailable and finding the manager unhelpful, and one diner had an overcooked, dry Monkfish Scampi. A few mention being seated near a loud DJ or live singer that made conversation difficult on busy nights, and one noted large potholes in the car park. Several also recall specific occasions, including a birthday meal, a wake, and a birthday discount visit, handled with staff going out of their way to check on tables throughout the meal.
