About Colony Restaurant
Colony Restaurant is a halal modern Indian restaurant at 492 High Rd in Ilford, with a hookah bar and a cocktail list running alongside the kitchen. The menu pairs Indian-inspired street food with curries, including a prawn karai, and with grilled chops and steak, among them lamb chops. Prawns also appear as a starter, so a meal can run from small plates through to a main. Karak chai is served with dessert for those finishing the meal on something warm. The team also takes on catering.

“Absolutely wonderful experience! The staff were very welcoming and friendly, they took great care of us, the food was authentic and delicious, and the atmosphere was cosy with lovely music in the background. Everything was perfect, from the starters to the main course and dessert, finished off with a lovely cup of karak chai. Every dish was full of flavour, and the whole experience was fantastic. Highly recommended — can’t wait to visit again! ❤️”

“Update Jan2026: Rating this back up to four stars as recent visits have been much better with consistent quality in their food with their revised menu. Would recommend again. Update March 2026: The food is back! The desi food here is exceptional from their starters to mains like butter chicken. Update August 2026: The food is consistently good across all courses. The service is attentive and is the go to place in the local area for consistency when it comes to great food. Update October 2026: Exceptional, consistent on everything. It’s great knowing that pretty much anything I order here is likely to be on point, each and every time. The curries are easily the best and that is not just my opinion but from about 50 other people we have taken to eat there from all over the world. The chocolate San Sebastien cheesecake, is phenomenal too. We have dined in countless times this year, as couple and with groups of various sizes. We have had parties, we have done takeouts and each and every time, it’s always been the same with everyone commenting how good the food is. If I am being critical, I’d say the Prawn Karai could do with having more than 4 prawns in it as it seemed a little cheap given the price of the dish. Colony is 5* through and through! Past review What was once a good restaurant has gone downhill fast and no longer somewhere I’d recommend. In summary, overpriced poor value for money, slow service, apathetic management, they always mess something up but have some nice waiting staff. Make better use of your money and palate and go elsewhere otherwise accept you’ll likely leave disappointed. Was once the best restaurant in the area by far and we’d go regularly. The decor was nice with a pseudo upmarket look, service and management were always attentive, proactive and courteous and the food while some dishes were better than others, the standard was pretty good. However, it seems standards fall while competition increases; they’ve got lazy and let the ego take over. So what has changed? While the waiting staff are still very nice, attentive and courteous, everything else has slipped and is no longer the go to restaurant for us. While prices are pretty similar to before, portions have been reduced and this is clearly noticeable in their milk cake which went from being a cake to the size of a fish finger(it’s about a third of the size it was before!) The trio of sliders is now a duo of sliders, other starters have reduced in size. The value for money is poor given the quality is not on par and is evident is the likes of the lamb chops at £16 for 4 small pieces that are neither succulent or particularly tasty. Management no longer seem interested in knowing what people thought and checking in on tables. Service is slow and you can wait an hour to receive your mains after you have finished your starters. We’ve received the bill incorrectly several times from items we didn’t order to the entire bill being wrong and of a completely different table. Previously management would proactively seek to rectify mistakes and make customers leave happy but that is no longer the case and is more a case of it is what it is now. While they do take card and cash payments, waiting 15 minutes for their machine to get signal so you can pay with your card make a bad experience worse. Sad to see one of our favoured restaurants go down this path but definitely not a place I’d opt to go again given that there are now much better restaurant options available. You’ll get much better food, service, quality throughout by heading over to Gants Hill where there isn’t a similar style restaurant but much better in every regard.”

“Great customer service, staff are very funny and entertaining. They’ve got a really nice interior with ambient lighting, perfect for photos. Prices are really affordable as well, we only paid £26 pp and there were 8 of us!”

“First-time visit and it was great 👌 We went on a family outing to celebrate a relative’s first anniversary. It was a Saturday evening, just as the restaurant opened, and we had made an earlier reservation for the group. The service was excellent, from a warm welcome, to accommodating our request for seating that allowed space for a baby in a pram. The waiters were especially friendly with our two young children and even gave them a little treat (boxed brownies) at the end of the meal. We ordered a variety of starters including poppadoms, paneer, prawns, and chaat. The prawns were fantastic, well cooked with just the right amount of spice for a little kick. The only small criticism was that the poppadoms could have been served with larger portions of dips. For the mains, we had steak, a mixed grill, curries, and burgers for the kids. Everything was cooked well, full of flavour, and enjoyed by all. The chops and steak in particular received rave reviews. To finish, we ordered a selection of desserts along with kharak chai. The desserts were excellent, rich in flavour, with the right texture and moisture. The chai was smooth, flavoursome, and perfectly sweetened. Before leaving, it was time for prayers, and once again the staff accommodated us by providing a prayer area and prayer mats. Overall, the experience was outstanding. The combination of great food, excellent service, and a clean, spacious setting makes this restaurant ideal not just for casual meals, but also for celebrating special occasions. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and will definitely be going back to try more of the dishes we didn’t get to sample this time.”

“We had a fantastic experience at Colony! The food was delicious — we ordered the ribs, BBQ dishes and more, and everything was so tasty. The mango lassi was absolutely amazing and definitely a highlight! 😍 What made our experience even more special was the wonderful service. The staff were all so friendly and welcoming, especially Mala. She was incredibly sweet, attentive and interactive with us, making sure we felt comfortable and well looked after throughout our visit. She really went above and beyond and is definitely a credit to the team! Thank you so much to everyone at Colony for making our visit such an enjoyable one. We truly appreciated the delicious food and excellent hospitality. We’ll definitely be back and would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for great food and lovely service! ❤️”
