Quick info
About Banana Leaf
Banana Leaf is a South Indian restaurant in Ilford, at 96 Cranbrook Rd, and it opens daily. The menu covers Sri Lankan and South Indian dishes, with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. The shovel platter arrives on a shovel loaded with lamb, chicken and seafood. The large version adds fish fry, omelettes, crabs, prawns and squid, and the portions are big enough for a group. Lamprais is steamed in a leaf bunch, so it takes time to prepare and is not always available. A rose martini sits on the cocktail list. Parties are welcome, with space on the restaurant floor and downstairs.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often come for the shovel platter, a large serving of lamb, chicken, crab, prawns and squid that one diner says feeds four adults, with a fish fry described as soft inside and crispy outside. Close behind are the non veg thali and the Lamprais, which one reviewer notes is not always available because it takes time, and a Reshmi Soup praised for its tamarind flavour. The rose martini cocktail is called unique by one reviewer. Diners also describe friendly staff, a clean room, and a restaurant that hosts parties upstairs and downstairs, with one group given a balloon wreath frame. The complaints are small and specific: parking was hard to find and expensive for one diner, one warns the shovel is a lot of food, the Palak Paneer tasted slightly sweet to another, and a cold drink had no fizz and tasted like sugary water. One reviewer closes on a food recommendation from a server that led to a first visit they plan to repeat.

“First time trying Sri Lankan food here, and I went with my friend who is from the country itself. We ordered Reshmi Soup, Palak Paneer for me, and Chicken & Lamb Biryani for my friend. The soup was fantastic — rich and full of lovely tamarind flavour. The Palak Paneer was good, though it had a slightly sweet taste, which felt a little different to what I’m used to. The only downside was the cold drink we ordered: it had no fizz and tasted just like sugary water. Overall, though, it was a nice experience — I’d give it 4 out of 5 stars.”

“Highly recommending their non veg thali and Lamprais. You dont get Lamprais all the time as it takes time but we were lucky for our order. The flavors are all packed together in the steamed bunch. Everything was well cooked.”
