About The Grapes, Gee Cross

The Grapes, Gee Cross is a pub in Hyde at 289 Stockport Rd, with a separate restaurant area set apart from the bar where sports are shown. For groups split between dinner and the game, a slightly pared down bar menu lets people eat in the main bar while watching the match, so the meal and the viewing happen in the same room. The kitchen cooks a Sunday roast with all the trimmings, and roast beef is among the options. Lamb appears as well, in a lamb shank and in spicy lamb koftas served on a flatbread. The pub runs as walk-in.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers praise the food most, with the lamb dishes and chicken dishes named repeatedly: spicy lamb koftas on a flatbread, a lamb shank, salt and pepper chicken, a buttermilk chicken burger and a katsu chicken curry. Close behind are king prawns on sourdough, arancini, waffles and a Sunday roast beef with all the trimmings, though one diner wanted extra gravy. Staff are described as friendly, smiling and polite, and one reviewer says tables are cleared quickly. Some note a separate restaurant area away from the sports crowd in the bar, plus a slightly pared down bar menu for eating during a match. One reviewer says the atmosphere was missing a little something. The one critical account describes a medium rare sirloin that arrived with blood pooling on the plate and unrendered fat. It was taken back and returned after the plate was wiped, with no reduction on the bill and a requested glass of water never arriving. That reviewer blamed the kitchen and management rather than the lone server, who was running around busy. Another reviewer travelled three hours after seeing the pub in a vlog and found the trip justified.

“I've not been here since I moved from Newton and I used to love it, but today was not a good visit at all. Firstly, the positives: My wife loved her Lamb Shank. The latte was nice. I ordered the steak (medium rare, of course). When it came to the table the steak was drowning in a plate of blood, the chef had not rendered the fat, cut any of it off, but worst of all the steak had not rested, this evident by the amount of blood on my plate. The girl took it back and 2 minutes later brought out the same steak with a wiped plate. I was hungry as we'd been out walking all day so I had to make do. By this time my latte had gone so I asked for a glass of cold water which I never got. When she brought the bill I was honestly expecting it to be reduced a little, but there was no reduction at all. If your chef cannot cook a simple sirloin, don't advertise it, and certainly don't charge £22 for it. The young girl was on her own and was running around like crazy, so I don't blame her at all, the faults are with the chef and management. I honestly doubt we will go back which is sad as this used to be my regular place for a Sunday lunch.”
