About The Empress
The Empress is a pub in Hull, on Alfred Gelder St, and a former Courage house. Live singers and artists perform here, and a DJ plays music on a set night, so the pub works as a place for live entertainment as well as a drink. The bar pours a wide range of beers and lagers, with Strongbow on draught. Inside, the space is larger than the frontage suggests, and old pictures of Hull hang on the walls. Door staff are stationed at the front entrance.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the outside seating, a large area at the front where several enjoy watching the world go by, with a smoking area too. Close behind is the busy, welcoming atmosphere inside, where the pub proves bigger than it looks and old pictures of Hull line the walls. Staff and door staff are called pleasant and fun, and singers performing after 4pm and a lively weekend crowd earn praise. One regular describes it as a bit rough around the edges but comfortable, like an old pair of boots. Drinks draw mixed comment: proper Strongbow on draft and a wide range of beers and lagers please, though reviewers note there are no craft beers and no cask conditioned real ale. One reviewer finds the DJ plays a limited range of songs, hearing the same ones at least two Saturdays a month. One parent recalls a front door security man crossing the road to hand over an umbrella to them and their child waiting in the rain.

“A terrific bar to sit outside and watch the world go by, or to sit comfortably inside and chill. I was going to knock a star off because there are no craft beers, but then they've got proper strongbow on draft so I put it back.”

“Great historic Hull, the staff are very pleasant. Lots of old pictures of Hull”

“The DJ seems to have a very limited range of songs/music to play. Whenever we're in, at least 2 Saturdays a month we hear the same songs played.”

“We visited The Empress before we attended a party and this pub never changes, which isn't a bad thing. I've been using this pub for over 40 years and its like an old pair of boots, yes its a bit ruff around the edges but its so welcoming and comfortable you'll know you'll be coming back!”

“Great pub. Bloody nice wood chip wallpaper in the toilets.”
