About Ye Olde Blue Bell
Ye Olde Blue Bell is a Sam Smith's pub in Hull, at 54-56 Market Pl, down a narrow alleyway between the Trinity Market entrance on Market Place and the Hepworth Arcade. A large blue bell marks the way in. Phones and electronic devices are not allowed inside, so a visit here means conversation without screens, and a Digital Detox sign is displayed while staff and regulars rebuke phone use. There is no music, no swearing, and no children or dogs. The bar serves the brewery's own-brand beers, lagers and cider, with no guest beers. A real coal fire burns in the pub, historical Hull prints hang on the walls, and a pool table sits upstairs. No food is served, and payment is cash only.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers return to this Sam Smith's pub above all for its no-phones rule, which they say turns the room into a place for conversation. One describes ending up in three separate chats with other patrons, and several call the face-to-face atmosphere refreshing. The own-brewed beers draw steady praise, including a chocolate stout that tastes like real chocolate, fruit beers, the lager, a cider, and a mixed bitter and mild. Others mention a real coal fire, a pool table upstairs, and historical Hull prints on the walls. Staff are called friendly and welcoming, and pints are described as reasonably priced. The rules are the main trade-off: no children, no swearing, no music and no dogs, and one visitor was rebuked for taking a photo. One notes there are no guest beers, and another says no food is served. One reviewer found it cash only. Several point out the pub sits down a narrow alley, with a large blue bell marking the way in from Market Place.

“Sam Smith's pub. No phones or tablets, just the good old face to face conversation and fun. People might see this as a disadvantage, but I feel it's refreshing. The staff are great and my faves are: chocolate stout that tastes like actual chocolate! Some nice fruit beers. Can't go wrong with the lager of course. Beers can be bought for takeout. Pool table upstairs for those who like pool. Overall a nice good old fashioned pub with nice quiet atmosphere and historical Hull prints on the wall.”

“Ye Olde Blue Bell and had a wonderful time. The pub provides the perfect setting for a digital detox, offering a cosy atmosphere where you can just enjoy the moment and speak to the other patrons. The pool table is a great addition, making it ideal for some friendly competition while having a drink. I sampled their own-brewed beer, and it didn’t disappoint. I went for a mixed a bitter and mild together. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and the overall vibe made it a great place to unwind with friends. Highly recommend it for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy some good drinks and fun!”

“Outstanding pub! If you like tradition, good beer, proper conversation then this is the place for you. Thankfully totally unspoiled by dreadful ‘modernisation’ schemes that have utterly devastated so many pubs. This is not the place to take children or phones.”
