Customer Review Summary
Reviewers return most for the fish and chips, praised for proper home made chips, sweet and flaky haddock in crispy batter, and mushy peas with tartar sauce. Close behind are the burgers, described as juicy and rich, and the Sunday roast, where one diner cites tender meat and homemade gravy and another a roast beef lunch. Also named are the gnocchi in large pieces, a caesar salad with a hard boiled egg, Creme Brulée, Eton mess and lattes. Service is repeatedly called friendly and attentive, and one bartender kept bringing treats for the dogs. The fire and candlelight get mentioned as well. Several note the food is pricey, and one suggests a reservation is a safe bet. The sharpest complaint comes from a vegan who called ahead and was told a vegan roast was possible, but on arrival was offered only tenderstem broccoli, a mushroom risotto and sorbet, then paid the two course set menu price for a plate of broccoli, though even that reviewer found the staff lovely.

“I went to the Chequers yesterday with some friends for a Sunday roast and was really disappointed. I am a vegan and so naturally checked the menu before going and noticed there was nothing vegan on the menu. I called up two weeks in advance and ask what their vegan options were. I got told a list of things, which included a vegan roast dinner. They also said they’d make a note on the booking. When we arrived, they seem surprised when I asked what the options were, and the waitress (who was so nice by the way, no complaints about the actual staff there who were all great) had to go off for 5-10 minutes to find out what I could have. She then told me they don’t get vegans very often so weren’t prepared for this, so I could have broccoli for starters, a mushroom risotto for mains, and sorbet for pudding. I said how I had called in advance and was told I could still have a roast to which she said I couldn’t. I went with the broccoli for starters (the Sunday is also a minimum of 2 courses so there wasn’t an option to opt out of both starters and pudding) and when it came it was literally just a plate of tenderstem broccoli with a charred lime half. Although the broccoli was tasty, it was literally just a plate of broccoli with nothing else. The risotto came and it was a good mushroom risotto, but my gripe comes with having called up miles in advanced and promised a vegan roast lunch and then the restaurant not following through or putting some thought into preparing. The final kicker was that the bill came, showing the risotto was normally charged at £19, but the 2 course set menu was £32, meaning I paid £13 for a plate of broccoli. I still had a lovely time with my friends and the staff were lovely and the fire was great, but I feel it’s important to speak up about this as a vegan as a couple of tweaks to the veggie roast dinner was all it could have taken.”

“As and Englishman that lived by the sea, I’m qualified to tell you this was the greatest haddock and chips I’ve experienced. Proper home made chips, sweet and flaky haddock in a deliciously crispy batter, and the most flavoursome tartar sauce, mushy peas and lemon. The muscles and fries to accompany were to die for. The service was attentive, friendly and courteous. Bravo 👏”

“Really enjoyable experience! Wait staff were really quick, attentive, and humorous. Never had to wait too long for anything. Food is definitely on the pricey side but incredibly delicious, very generous portion on the gnocchi I had (never actually seen gnocchi pieces that large before!). Burger was blush pink in the middle, very juicy and rich. Really nice place, seems to be insanely popular as there was already a sizeable crowd gathering outside before opening, we just walked in as a table of two but I think we just got lucky, I think a reservation is a safe bet with this pub.”

“We had such a lovely time dining here. The atmosphere is incredibly cozy, especially with the warm candlelight glowing on the wooden tables. The food was absolutely delicious. I particularly enjoyed the fish and chips, which were perfectly golden and served with a nice portion of mushy peas. It is a fantastic spot for a relaxed meal. We will definitely be back.”
