About The Empress

The Empress is a pub and restaurant at 10 Church Square in Harrogate, with a beer garden on the Stray. The kitchen runs a carvery, and the menu also lists scampi with home made chips. An upstairs function room hosts events, giving groups a separate space away from the main pub for a wedding reception or a staff party. Dogs are welcome, so owners can bring them along. A public grassed space lies opposite the pub.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the generous portions, singling out scampi with home made chips, plus a chicken Caesar, steak and a blackened chicken pasta. The beer garden and upstairs function room also draw mentions, and a staff party was happy with the bar service. One couple moved their wedding reception elsewhere after the landlady seemed unbothered when they raised a clashing family fun day with a BBQ, DJ and choir.

“Myself and my wife booked the empresses for our wedding reception 5 months in advance, we thought it was a great venue that ticked all our boxes , we like the layout so we could we could have reception upstairs and be able to make use of the stray outside too, With 3 weeks to go for the big day we saw an event poster on Facebook for family fun day , bbq dj and choir which we found disappointing as we felt the venue were trying to cram as much into one day as possible which would have diminished our special day potentially resulting in us stinking of bbq and having our wedding dinner drowned out with a choir right outside the front door and a dj that would potentially have clashed with ours, I phoned up to raise my concerns only to be met with a stand offish response of “you said you was gonna be upstairs and I can assure you it won’t interfere with your wedding do” despite myself saying two djs would be playing at the same time and that we also don’t want to stink of bbq arriving and going outside, The landlady didn’t really seem bothered that she could lose a booking saying it’s ok if you want to cancel…. We felt it wasn’t a great start to our wedding plans and decided to go elsewhere with 3 weeks to go , which to put it bluntly was a lot of stress and upset especially for a day that only happens once between a couple, Ive never experienced such blasé laid back mentality in hospitality in my time and definitely don’t expect it when the booking is tied to the name wedding reception”

“Had a really lovely lunch today with hubby and MIL. We all ordered the scampi which was really good with the most amazing home made chips. The portions were really generous and the staff lovely! Very reasonable price!”
