About Smiths Arms
Smiths Arms is a Chef & Brewer pub in Harrogate, on Church Row in the hamlet of Beckwithshaw, and its 18th-century building has a honey-coloured sandstone exterior. Inside, an L-shaped layout puts the restaurant on one side and the bar on the other, with wooden floors, exposed stone and rafters. The menu includes cottage pie croquettes and a vegetarian selection, with vegan options as well. Sunday lunch comes with Yorkshire puddings and small jugs of gravy, and smaller portions are available for those who want them. The apple tart is served with vegan ice cream. The pub is open daily.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often point to the apple tart, described as a delight, with one noting the accompanying vegan ice cream is undetectable as such. Close behind are the Sunday lunch, with smaller portions, little jugs of proper gravy and lovely Yorkshire puddings, and the cottage pie croquettes, which one diner could have eaten by the bucket. Others name the duo of chicken and a salted caramel sundae. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and efficient, and several mention the spotless interior, the garden, dog-friendly bar area and plentiful parking. The food draws the sharpest complaints. One reviewer found the food seemed frozen then defrosted, with barely warm, mushy broccoli and a mushroom and ale pie on the cold side. Another found the burger lettuce wilted and the chicken dry, and the prawns billed as pan fried in garlic butter arrived plain with tomato sauce. Two others call the portions on the small side. One vegan diner asks for better starter options, closing a visit that still ended with that apple tart.

“Absolutely gorgeous food. The apple and raspberry tart is a delight. The mains were also very delicious but… the portions are on the small side. Still such an enjoyable meal that I will visit again.”

“Lovely country style pub in the small hamlet of Beckwithshaw just outside Harrogate. Lovely old school chic, wooden floors, exposed stone and rafters etc. Amelia and Leanne's service was very good. The food was very nice, about average prices. The place is like an L shape, one side is the restaurant and one the bar. Outside seating and eating in warmer weather. Pretty good selection of beers and drinks generally. Loads of parking.”

“Had Sunday lunch today. It was very nice. Had the smaller portions and it was lovely to see our plates not overflowing. Lovely little jugs of proper gravy, Yorkshire puds lovely. Staff were all friendly and efficient without being intrusive. Definitely on our list for a return visit.”

“Gorgeous pub garden with nice atmosphere but sadly the food seems to be all frozen and then defrosted. My brocolli was barely warm and mushy and the mushroom and ale pie was on the cold side. Are all pub chains just offering mass produced frozen meals now?”
