Customer Review Summary
The caveat is kitchen consistency and waiting. One party of seven waited 40 minutes for starters and 30 each for mains and desserts despite a quiet room, and the plate for a sticky toffee pudding arrived frozen. Others describe a salmon fish cake that was dry with a rock-hard breadcrumb coating, scotch eggs with a crust like armour, and soggy, undercooked fish and chips. Staff responded to the delays with an apology, reduced charges, and complimentary chips.

“Popped in for a late lunch - 2.15pm as we were in the area. Food was a big disappointment. Had to wait nearly half an hour for our meals. Table next to us had an equally long wait. The salmon fish cake I ordered was very dry and I believe made with tinned salmon which does not justify the price at all. Breadcrumb coating was so hard I could barely cut through it with my knife. The hubby’s fish finger sandwich was ok but nothing to rave about. The restaurant did give us complimentary chips for the long wait at which point I should’ve addressed the issue about the fish cake, but didn’t bother as we already waited quite a while for our food to arrive and I didn’t think there was much they could do to improve on the quality of it apart from replacing it with something else. We used to frequent this restaurant in the past but have not been back for a while so we were disappointed to find that the food standards have slipped. Won’t be returning anytime soon.”

“Atmosphere is wonderful, the bar is cozy, and (happily for this American) they have a decent Kentucky Bourbon in stock. Delicious bourbon old fashioneds, will be sure to visit again the next time I'm in Harpenden.”

“Tonight was a bad night . I think the cook / chef has changed . Scotch eggs had a crust that was like armour . The fish from fish and chip meal was soggy and under cooked , had lumps in it . The seafood dish. Medallions of sea trout and halibut was lukewarm warm . With 3 pieces of trout and 1 inch of halibut. Not appealing at all .when asked how his food was I said ok to which I had no follow up . Wong be coming back for a while either . Need to sort the door out Tom as freezing when people leave open . Such a shame”

“I'd give The White Horse six stars if I could. We came here for dinner one evening recently, Jozef took care of us from start to finish, talking us through the menu and drinks, answering all my pedantic questions about how things were served! The food was first rate, the menu offered up loads to choose from, the staff and service were superb and the place itself - particularly outdoors - is perfectly located and really pleasant. We will be going again soon.”

“Fantastic meal last night to celebrate my Son-in-Law's birthday. Food was excellent and our waiter was superb. Brilliant service. Nothing was too much and he certainly kept my young Dad entertained! Beautiful evening, so we sat outside. Highly recommend.”

“The White Horse is a delightful pub in Hatching Green. Five minutes from the bustling centre of Harpenden on the one hand & Junction 9 of the M1 on the other, the pub has a lovely country setting, surrounded by a large leafy garden & terrace. The bar is warm & cosy, with old parquet & low beams hung with antique copper jugs, while the dining room is light & fresh, its French windows opening onto a sunny terrace. In our charming private dining room, up a winding stair in the oldest part of the pub, we can comfortably host a dinner party for twelve.”
