About Marchmont Arms Piccotts End

Marchmont Arms Piccotts End is a gastropub in Hemel Hempstead, set in a converted stately home with a garden on Piccotts End Rd. Sunday roasts anchor the weekly menu, and steaks appear among the main courses. Starters include grilled octopus, as well as prawns and scallops. Dessert brings the chocolate bomb, finished with warm chocolate sauce poured over the shell at the table. The pub is open daily, so the kitchen and bar are available any day of the week. The building also hosts weddings, birthday parties and other private events, and the room can be decorated for the occasion, which suits groups planning a celebration.

Customer Review Summary

Weddings and birthday parties draw the warmest praise. Three reviewers credit an events organiser and her team with decorating, managing staff and keeping a wedding reception and a birthday party running smoothly. Steaks come close behind, described as tender and melt in the mouth, alongside grilled octopus, a beetroot carpaccio with goat cheese, and prawns and scallops called beautifully presented. One reviewer also praises a friendly, attentive server, and another calls the newly renovated restaurant beautiful. Complaints centre on service. One diner who booked for a fiancée's birthday reports a long wait for drinks, no cutlery or napkins, and a burger described as inedible that staff did not address. The special dessert then arrived with no acknowledgment of the occasion. Others mention a wait to be served, an order that never went through, overcooked chicken in a child's meal, and a first-choice main being unavailable. Dessert portions are called larger than expected, and the chocolate bomb is remembered for warm sauce melting through its shell.

“We attended a wedding reception at the Marchmont Arms yesterday. What an amazing afternoon and evening. Many thanks to Andrea and her friendly team. Very welcoming and professional. Nothing was too much trouble. Over and above service at all times. The team were very knowledgeable about all food and wine . A great day .... So a huge thank you to Andrea for managing your team and making the day so special. I would definitely recommend this venue to others.”

“The Marchmont Arms — and a special mention for Mollee! What can I say? The Marchmont Arms has absolutely smashed it. Great atmosphere, great food, great drinks and, most importantly, Mollee deserves her own paragraph because she is an absolute legend! From the moment we arrived, Mollee was friendly, attentive and genuinely brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble, and she somehow managed to keep everything running smoothly while making us feel like we were the most important customers in the building. I’m not sure how she does it — I suspect caffeine, witchcraft or an extremely well-hidden second pair of arms. The service was fantastic, the atmosphere was spot on and the whole place had that rare feeling of somewhere you actually want to stay rather than somewhere you’re counting down the minutes until you can leave. And Mollee? Give that woman a pay rise, a medal and possibly her own statue outside the pub. Absolutely fantastic experience. We’ll definitely be back — although next time we may have to warn Mollee in advance that we’re coming! 10/10. Would recommend without hesitation. 🍻👏”

“I booked a table for my fiancée’s birthday, and told them on the booking form online. Waited 25 minutes for our drinks (which I ended up collecting myself in the end), moved inside to order food, with no cutlery or napkins, then our mains came after an hour and the burger was inedible. Giving the staff a chance I let them know and nothing was done. I then ordered a special dessert and reminded staff it was my fiancées birthday, and shock… nothing when the desert arrived. Real shame for spending £200 on a Tuesday. For those prices in a pub you expect proper service. Real potential but not quite there yet.”

“First visit and had a great time. I’ll definitely visit again. We sat outside and ordered food from the table however drinks need to be ordered from the bar there’s no table service (on the day we visited, not sure if this is offered at other times) The bar was really busy but we arrived early afternoon which was very busy, and it quietened later in the day.”
