About The Green Dragon
The Green Dragon is a pub in St Albans on Waterside, beside the River Colney, set in a 14th-century building that has been refurbished with its ancient architecture preserved. The kitchen now leans toward Nepalese and Indian cooking, with momos, lamb curry and peshwari naan on the menu, and pub classics sit alongside them. Roast dinners are served on Sundays, so the kitchen covers both a curry and a traditional roast. At the bar, cask ales stand next to a wider selection of ales and Guinness. Parking can be hard to find at weekends.
Good to know
“The Green Dragon has stood beside the River Colney on Waterside for generations - a weathered, friendly place where St Albans locals, walkers, and weekend diners have long found a warm fire and a proper pint. The building wears its history quietly; you can feel it in the low beams, the soft light near the river, and the view outside.”

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often come away talking about the recently introduced Nepalese and Indian menu, with curry at its center. Reviewers single out the spicy shrimp, the Kuriah prawn curry with about fifteen prawns, the momos, chilli chicken and chilli paneer with naan, and a lamb curry described as substantial. Portions are called large and generous, and complimentary poppadoms and chutneys come up. Close behind, the Sunday roast is praised for tender meat and perfect veg, and the prawn and crayfish linguine, a thick cut ham ciabatta and sticky toffee pudding are also named. Reviewers also mention proper cask ales, a well poured Guinness, a dog-friendly bar area, a garden by the river and friendly staff. The caveats are modest. One returning customer says it is no longer the traditional English pub it was, now selling mainly curry, and found the samosas not home made. Another notes weekend parking can be challenging. One diner recalls the chef coming to the table worried a lamb curry was too salty and bringing a replacement dish to try anyway.

“Very friendly stuff and very tasty food. Portions are generous. We were looked after well. Parking can be challenging on a weekend. Nice green space across to keep the children busy.”

“Having had indifferent service at the nearby Colney Fox (which caused us to look elsewhere) we came upon the Green Dragon. We were immediately warmly greeted, almost like old friends, and shown to our table. The staff were chatty and friendly without being intrusive and the food was absolutely delicious. They take such care and pride that the chef came to our table, concerned that my lamb curry was too salty (it wasn’t and I hadn’t said anything to suggest it was). Nevertheless he insisted on bringing another dish to try. Incredible! We’ve never experienced that before! The peshwari naan was super, my lamb curry great (and substantial!) and my wife’s chicken biriyani delicious. Can you believe we had three drinks, poppadom and chutney tray and all this lovely food for less than £50?? If you want friendly, attentive service and great food without going bankrupt, you must go to the Green Dragon. I can’t recommend it highly enough.”

“Went to have a bit of lunch by the river as been before, it now sells mainly curry dishes, there are a few non curry dishes but its not the traditional English pub it was. Saying that the curry was excellent tasty and large portions, the Kuriah prawn I had was great and about 15 prawns! Wife had chicken curry which was tender and tasty also We shared some samosa which were ok but definitely not home made as the curry was. Complementary poppadoms and chutneys 2 beers 2 large wines £74 all in Great value and great food”

“The restaurant has recently changed the menu to a Nepalese Indian cuisine. It is divine! From someone who has been to India several times, I can say this food is outstanding. I recommend the spicy shrimp.”

“We stopped at this pub looking for lunch and didn’t realise it also had Nepalese and Indian food which we love! We got the momos, shrimp, rice and spiced potatoes and everything was amazing. The shrimp was very tender and the momos were some of the best we’ve ever had. I would definitely recommend coming here for lunch and dinner. The staff was very friendly as well.”
