About The Hungry Gannet

The Hungry Gannet is a cash-only takeaway café at 109 Almada St in Hamilton, serving breakfast, lunch, desserts, cakes and coffee. The Peckish breakfast is a very large portion, and the American breakfast and Nutella pancakes can come with strawberries and ice cream. Breakfast rolls with sausage and black pudding sit alongside hot and cold rolls, sandwiches and baguettes, and baked potatoes come with a chicken filling and salad. Ice cream and slushies are also on offer. Food is ordered at the counter, then payment and coffee orders happen at the till. Three tables inside are there for anyone who wants to eat on site. A cash machine sits a few steps away.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the Peckish Breakfast, a huge plate that one diner warns is not for anyone feeling merely peckish. Close behind are crisp, light breakfast rolls with sausage, an omelette with chicken and tomatoes, a Tandoori Chicken Wrap called authentic and flavourful, and baked potatoes with chicken filling and salad. Portions are repeatedly called generous, the food fresh and the prices reasonable. Staff are described as friendly, and several mention the welcoming owner. Most see it as mainly a takeaway with a few tables inside, busy at lunch and on weekends. The criticism is thinner but specific. One reviewer found the ordering setup strange, with food ordered at one counter and coffee at the till, and noted that the people taking orders also fill them, which slows things down, and that the food is pre-cooked. Another said the strawberries on a Nutella pancake order tasted and smelled off, and left the rest uneaten. One couple cleared their plates but were too full to finish a strawberry milkshake.

“We err looking for a coffee place and recommended here by friends, when we arrived we found adequate parking area outside and entered , were greeted by staff who were friendly and helpful. The food was obviously freshly made and accompanied salad tasty and fresh. We were ample to hear each other even though a busy lunchtime. Nice surroundings and music at a gentle background level. All in all, thoroughly enjoyable our experience. Thank you to the helpful attentive friendly staff.”

“My partner came in today to get us some food. We ordered pancakes with strawberries n Nutella. Pancakes were ok but the strawberries tasted n smelled off , had to take them off but by that point the smell is everywhere and I ended up putting my fork down n leaving the rest. I get strawberries can look ok when they aren’t, but the smell is so strong it would have been hard to miss , like it’s a few days off smell I wont be back”

“This is primarily a takeaway with 3 tables for eating inside. The food is ok but the ordering setup is a bit strange. You need to order food at a counter on the way in the move to order coffee at the till. Also, the people taking orders are also filling orders, which increases waiting times. The food is pre-cooked, so it's not made to order. The owner is very welcoming and friendly.”
