About The Pelican Inn (Wye Valley)

The Pelican Inn (Wye Valley) is a real ale pub on St Mary's St in Gloucester, affiliated with Wye Valley brewery, with HPA, Butty Bach and Wholesome Stout named on the bar. Gloucestershire CAMRA named it Pub of the Year in 2020 and 2022. Ten real ales are on, alongside guest beers, four or five craft kegs and a growing collection of unusual cans and bottles. Raspberry ripple cider is one of several ciders. Beer festivals run each March and June, with a tap-takeover in October. Cheese and onion cobs, crisps and bar snacks are on the bar. The pub has two indoor areas and a log fire in winter, with no fruit machines and no sports TV, so conversation is the entertainment. It sits close to the cathedral and handy for Kingsholm rugby ground, with a rugby crowd before and after matches. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return above all for the Wye Valley real ales, with HPA, Butty Bach and Wholesome Stout named most often, and a lighter session ale called Pyoneer also singled out. Close behind is the atmosphere, described as a real old pub that feels like someone's front living room, with a roaring log fire, quiet conversation and no fruit machines or sports TV. Several praise the bar staff and a welcoming crowd, including rugby fans before and after matches at Kingsholm. Cider drinkers mention the raspberry ripple cider, a dry traditional cider and pear wine, and the large outside seating area gets a mention. Cheese and onion cobs on the bar are the usual food. One reviewer was less happy after the fruity cider was swapped for one they disliked and the bar lighting turned bright, which they felt spoiled the old style main bar. They raised their rating again once the raspberry ripple returned and the lighting was softened after an owner reply.

“A very nice place, great service attitude, comfortable environment, perfect for chatting, local dry traditional cider and pear wine. If you like sparkling wine, you can try Fizzy.”

“I called in there this evening for a swift pint on the way home from my swimming club purely because I couldn't easily call in to the Royal Exchange in Hartpury - Maisemore road closed - which is my local. I'd never visited before even though I'd lived nearby in Archdeacon St for most of my early life until late teens. I'll look forward to visiting again - it's very much a real old pub with excellent beer selection. Bigger inside than I was expecting and I just felt comfortable there.”

“Probably the best beer and atmosphere in the city centre although limited to one brewery. Great bar staff. (Drunken Duck runner up or first if you prioritise overall choice. Great customer base in both)”

“I've been meaning to visit the Pelican for a while now but being in Gloucester to fashion the occasion has proved a small sticking point until today - dropped into the antiques quarter to pick up a couple 1921 silver candlesticks and serendipity struck - so here I am. From when you enter and it feels like you've walked into someone's front living room (roaring real fire to the right, everyone supping ales and quietly chatting and that indescribable feeling that "your home"), to the generous welcome from the bar tender onto the cheese and onion cobs on the bar, you know you've made the right decision to get out of the rain and install yourself in a hostelry of quality and repute where you know the ale isn't going to disappoint. This is a Wye Valley brew house so I started with the HPA (and a cob) whilst my better half settled on Wholesome Stout. Number two was a lighter but delicious session ale called Pyoneer (sic). We availed ourselves of some other bar snacks whilst the place filled up and left not a single seat in the house. We did leave early (to get the Six Nations in at home) but we'll be back - my new favourite pub in the whole of the South West.”

“Popped in for a couple of beers before watching the rugby at Kingsholm. Excellent atmosphere. No trouble or agro. Lots of people having a nice afternoon and enjoying themselves. Good beer and very handy for the ground”
