Quick info
About The Abbey
The Abbey is a bar in Gloucester at 53 Northgate St, with wooden floors throughout and a mix of booths, tables and chairs. Its bottomless brunch comes with unlimited drinks, a format that suits a group of friends sharing a meal. Live sports run on large TV screens on the wall, with a big screen and smaller ones dotted around, so a match can be followed from different parts of the room. A pool table area and a dart board give the bar games to play between rounds. A courtyard sits outside. Dogs are welcome both inside and out, so regulars can bring theirs along.

Customer Review Summary
Bottomless brunch is what most reviewers return to, with several describing the food as great or excellent, drinks that kept coming whenever wanted, and a server who kept checking on refills for a table of nine. Close behind, diners praise the pub food, naming the burgers, a steak pie and a pizza cone, and one compares it favourably to Wetherspoons. A pint of Guinness, a floral gin and the big screens for football also get mentions, along with friendly staff, a courtyard and dog-friendly seating. Complaints are sharper and cluster around upkeep and service. One reviewer found a table filthy and was brushed off when reporting sick in the toilets, another describes limited menu options, staff unable to work the till for a Smirnoff Ice, a worn dartboard and greasy food, and one reports feeling ill afterwards. Another reviewer describes seeing the owner single out a group of foreign customers over ordering more drinks, which they read as discriminatory. Others note small coleslaw complaints and a drink arriving pre-mixed with tonic, though the gin's presentation won that diner over.

“I was very uncomfortable with what I witnessed at this pub. The owner approached a group of foreign customers and told them they had to order more drinks or leave, even though they had already purchased drinks. Meanwhile, other customers in similar circumstances were left alone. What made this especially disturbing was that the owner’s attention seemed to be focused on people of colour. From what I witnessed, this felt like discriminatory and racist treatment. No customer should be treated differently because of their ethnicity or the colour of their skin. Because of this experience, I will not be returning and I cannot recommend this pub. I would rather support businesses where everyone is treated with dignity, fairness, and respect.”

“We visited Gloucester today with the hopes of finding a lovely pub where we could play darts, The Abbey was recommended to us. Upon entering we were hopeful, although it was quiet for a Friday lunchtime. It started with trying to order food, and finding out there wasn’t very much available from the menu. Then we tried to order drinks, we couldn’t have the Smirnoff ice as the staff didn’t know how to operate the till. This may have been ok, but the attitude of the staff that served us was questionable at best. When the food arrived it was so disappointing, the grease has left us all feeling sick. The smell in the toilets ensured that we left the contents of our stomachs in there 🤢 the dart board didn’t even make up for it, as it was so worn down, the darts wouldn’t even stay in place. Might be worth replacing it? Needless to say, will definitely NOT be visiting again and would definitely NOT recommend”

“Came to watch the semifinals in the best atmosphere - the pub. Since the game was in minore intereste the pub was not crowded. The coleslaw was 6/10 due to too much mayo. The chips were ok but the fish was relativly small. Green salad was ok”

“Drinks were ok. Table was filthy. I told the bar staff there was a load of sick in the toilets and the young girl behind the bar said ‘uh yes we knowww’ (as if I was a nuisance for telling her) it wouldn’t take much to say ‘thank you for letting us know, we’re on it’.. if you know, clean it up? Rude staff. Dirty tables. Disgusting toilets. TV screens that have lost their colour?! Not the best. Won’t be returning. Won’t be recommending.”

“⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Abbey in Gloucester has once again lured us in with the promise of unlimited drinks, and somewhere between the second prosecco and the third cocktail, I’m fairly certain a warlock appeared at our table. He may have been the bartender. Or Dave. Hard to say. As brunch unfolded, the room filled with laughter, clinking glasses, and at least three fairies (possibly just very sparkly people) flitting between tables delivering plates of food like enchanted offerings. Time lost all meaning. One minute we were ordering, the next we were deep in a heroic quest to decide between “just one more drink” and “absolutely one more drink.” The food was excellent, the drinks kept flowing like a magical spring, and the staff handled the whole chaotic, fairy-warlock-brunch energy with skill and good humour. No one was turned into a frog, service was quick, and spirits were high—both emotional and alcoholic. All nonsense aside, we genuinely had a great time. Fantastic atmosphere, generous bottomless brunch, and exactly the kind of place you leave already planning your return. Five stars. Would happily brunch here again, spellbook optional.”
