Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the pub food, with the Steak and Jail Ale Pie coming up repeatedly alongside a Trio of Gloucester Sausage that one family called the best of their three typical dishes. Close behind are the burgers, described as huge and generous, plus a bacon, brie and cranberry sandwich on granary and beef and fish finger sandwiches that diners call great value. The real ales and wide drink selection draw regular mention, and the staff are described as welcoming and attentive, with one visitor noting the bar worker spoke Spanish. Diners also like the courtyard, the wood burner and the quaint inn decor. The one recurring complaint concerns large groups. A party of 14 found that booking meant pre-ordering from a reduced menu with no steak on it, and a party of 15 was likewise offered a reduced menu, though they still found the food excellent. Several suggest pre-booking for groups, and one diner mentions the kitchen even brought cold custard with the puddings.

“Went here as a part of a group of 14 for a birthday meal. It's a very nice pub and the food was spot on! The only reason. I wouldn't give it five stars for one reason. if you book as a group you need to pre-order (which is very common and I have no issue with that). My issue is that you have to pre order from a reduced menu. It should be one or the other. Preorder or reduced menu not both. The reduced menu didn't even have a steak on it! Aside from this the food was excellent and the service was good. I would definitely go back but just not as part of a big group.”

“We were a party of 15 strong and nothing was too much trouble! Cos of the size of our party we were offered a reduced menu but that didnt matter as we all pre ordered. Some of us ordered starters which were belly busting in their own right? The Goat cheese and Beetroot stack was soooo filling,I had to leave some to make room for my main. All the mains came in a timely fashion 👏, we were looked after well When the mains arrived we couldn't believe how well presented and appetising they all looked 😍 We all agreed that the food was excellent and we were glad we booked! So now you have 15 new customers who will venture out and will be perusing your menu in more manageable groups(4-6) They did really well considering our size of our party,so hats off to all of you, front of house,in the kitchen and behind the bar!! Looks like we will be back in the very near future One bit of advice? Pre-book as that way your guaranteed to savour their expansive menu.......enjoy? As we all did 👏 👏”

“I found this pub by asking directions of a local woman. She pointed me back the way I was to go and actually walked me there! I asked where is the best pub Food and we were actually right in front of us! In fact she said this the the best food in Gloucester by far! We went there twice and were treated like kings. If you go, you have to pet the golden cocker spaniel named Bonnie owner is Clyde no kidding. Just a caution not all dogs are human friendly so ask first. The Hamburger was huge, the scampi, and the smoked Salmon salad was delightful. Mike & Alison from Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada.”

“The staff and the place are very welcoming. It's decorated like a quaint inn. We had a burger with delicious meat and a generous side dish. Another plus is the clean and fragrant bathrooms. The paintings on the walls are cute and fun! The music creates a relaxing atmosphere.”
