Quick info
About Café René
Café René is a pub at 31 Southgate St in Gloucester, established in April 2003 and host and sponsor of the annual Gloucester Rhythm and Blues Festival since that first year. Live music from bands and solo acts runs at the pub, with late-night entertainment, and the events calendar also covers poetry nights, zombie walks and barbecues. In the kitchen, the steak and ale pie comes with a choice of three potato sides, and the sandwiches are full-size, including a fish finger sandwich. Vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options are on offer, and a vegetarian roast is part of the menu. The bar pours gin and Budvar, along with locally brewed ale. Inside, the pub has a distinctive ceiling and music playing.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the food, and the steak and ale pie comes up repeatedly, described as packed with steak and good gravy, with a choice of potato sides. The beef bourguignon is praised for tender beef in a rich sauce, and others mention a vegetarian Sunday roast, a lamb curry that was lovely and spicy, a fish finger sandwich and a Cajun chicken wrap. Portions are called huge or generous, and one reviewer says the price is reasonable for the size and quality. Close behind are the friendly staff, with the bar team described as chatty and smiling throughout, and an atmosphere reviewers call warm, cozy and authentic, with good music and regular music events. One reviewer is sad there are no cocktails, though the gin was good, and another says the coffee could be hotter. One reviewer notes the tables fill up quickly, so they plan to reserve next time, and a locally brewed ale alongside the pie is mentioned.

“Fantastic find. A hidden gem. Great interior. Excellent and friendly service from Lottie, who was very busy serving at the bar and serving the meals, all the time with a smile on her face. We chose the fish finger sandwich and Cajun chicken wrap. The food was delicious and the portions were very generous. Would highly recommend.”
