Customer Review Summary

Diners most often praise the food, naming the flat iron steak, the cod brioche sandwich, the prawn starter and the truffle and parmesan fries, with roast lamb and the small plates also singled out. Close behind is the service, described as smiley, quick and helpful, and the old hospital setting with its high ceilings, paintings and Victorian style wallpaper, which reviewers call cosy and unique. Drinks get a mention too, including beer on tap and a Strawberry Negroni. The complaints centre on consistency. One former regular says portions have shrunk, citing a mac and cheese side that looked like half a portion, a burnt kids burger and gravy replacing coleslaw. Another found the pasta badly overcooked, a third felt the fries arrived in a half-empty tin, and one said the room became overheated as it filled up. One diner also found staff rude and slow to check on the table. Even so, a gluten-free diner praises the clearly labelled options and a server who brought the plates out separately.

“This was my first and last time at cosy club as I was taking my nan out for food who I have not seen for a long time due to her being very ill only becoming well not long ago. But when my dad took a bite into his sausage he bit into a piece of glass! The staff were incredibly rude not checking on how our food was and walking past multiple times. It was an absolutely diabolical experience!”

“Great setting! Lots of space, very good service. Food is well prepared and presented, ingredients are very good quality. Personal observation: If you’re greedy (as I was) and choose the Butcher’s breakfast ask to add tomatoes and/or mushrooms, otherwise it’s meat, meat, and meat!”

“Quick frankly the most overcooked pasta I’ve ever had. I mean I’m not a fan of proper al dente but this is a whole new level of messing up. The flavour is great though and I don’t like wasting food so I did not send it back. Worth mentioning this place isn’t air-conditioned, and it became overheated as it filled up. I was left feeling faint. Service was ok overall.”

“We always come back here when in Exeter, it consistently ticks all the boxes: great menus, lovely staff & atmosphere. We’ve tried going to other places but they never compare on service or quality of the food. We actually had a table booked elsewhere this evening (Crave) but were so annoyed with the disinterested staff there who failed to seat us promptly that we headed straight here, and had the perfect evening 👌 plus the food was exceptional!! Try the small plates, they make excellent tapas.”

“Absolutely brilliant! Me and my girlfriend visited Exeter and wanted a nice dinner out. I booked a table for Saturday evening the night before as a last minute thing, and it was so worth it. The food was sensational, we thoroughly enjoyed each dish and also the service was so polite, attentive and friendly. The atmosphere was very old-fashioned and unique, which was lovely and also complimented the old architecture of the city. I would 100% go here again and have no doubt that I will be returning if I revisit Exeter.”
