About The Puffing Billy Inn
The Puffing Billy Inn is a gastropub on Station Rd in Exeter, with open joists overhead and a fireplace at the centre of the room. It sits on the Exmouth to Exeter cycle and walking route, a short walk from Exton station, so cyclists and walkers can stop in for a meal. The kitchen serves British dishes, including fish and chips with chunky chips and a turmeric-coloured batter. Lunch brings ciabatta sandwiches, and on Sundays a roast dinner comes as a large or small plate, with cauliflower cheese available as a side. The bar pours a selection of beers and gins. Dogs are welcome in part of the restaurant, though not in the carpeted extension away from the bar. A children's playground sits across the quiet road from the pub.

Customer Review Summary
The complaints concern value and pace. One table of four left hungry after a roast with one small bowl of cabbage and a single potato each, even after asking for extra veg. Another reviewer found the ciabatta sandwiches, a cheese and pickle and a fish finger, disappointing for the price. A roast pork Sunday lunch arrived after a very long wait and lukewarm, with no check-in or offer of another drink. One reviewer was given a small rosé instead of the large ordered and was not charged for the large.

“Stopped in for a couple of drinks on the walk from Exmouth to Topsham. Lovely pub with good selection of gins and friendly staff. We didn’t eat but the food on other tables looked great too.”

“Lovely find! Food was great. They were really helpful with my 6yr old son, as he doesn't like peas or beans, so they provided his favourite veggies instead. The playground across the (very quiet) road was perfectly placed to use after dinner.”

“I can't believe what I've just eaten! The best cooked fish and chips I have eaten in a restaurant. It was superbly fresh fish, and cooked to perfection, succulent and moist. The batter was not ordinary either, it had turmeric ( well, something yellow) colouring. Looked amazing. The chunky chips were outstanding! Boy, someone knows how to cook here. Love the name too. Puffing Billy.”

“Had the roast pork Sunday lunch & side of cauliflower cheese. The flavours were great and one of the better cauliflower cheeses I've eaten but unfortunately it took a very long time to arrive and came out Luke warm which spoilt it for us. Didn't get a curtosey check and waitress didn't come back to see if we wanted another drink or dessert.”

“The roast dinner was excellent - shame there was so little of it! All four of us left hungry, even after asking for extra veg - there was originally one small bowl of cabbage for the whole table. What we ate was lovely, but the portion was too small for what we paid. I'm not talking meat (we ate veggie) - but for veg we each got one potato on our plates, and a small bit of carrot and parsnip.”
