Customer Review Summary
The anniversary tasting menu is what most diners describe, with classical French cooking, Italian and Japanese influences, seafood and duck, and portions one reviewer calls some of the most generous they have met. Service runs close behind as the other consistent draw, described as attentive, friendly and outstanding. Wine pairings earn repeated praise, including a sommelier describing each pour. Diners also single out crab and a banana soufflé that one reviewer now calls a favourite dessert. At lunch, one pescatarian guest chose her own courses from the menu, and another reviewer had a tasty vegetarian meal. One reviewer was more critical of the tasting menu, finding that not every dish delivered on taste or technique, that the compositions made flavours hard to decipher, and that heavy use of foams diluted otherwise delicious sauces. Even so, a recurring detail in the praise is staff taking time to explain each ingredient at the table, never rushed.

“Incredible Dining Experience! We had an absolutely amazing time at Restaurant Martin Wishart. The staff were fantastic, incredibly attentive, and so friendly. They made us feel truly welcome from start to finish. The wine pairing menu was a wonderful surprise. It opened my eyes to so many new varieties. I usually stay far away from red wine, but the selection here completely changed my mind! The food was just as memorable. I tried crab for the first time and loved it. I also tried the banana soufflé for the first time, and oh my goodness, it is now my absolute favourite dessert!Thank you so much to the wonderful team for a perfect evening. We cannot wait to return!”

“Had a fabulous lunch here with amazingly creative and flavoursome food. Each dish looked great and did not disappoint. The pairing wines complemented each dish really well and introduced an eclectic and varied range of grapes and flavours. The staff were excellent, very attentive and created an altogether lovely dining experience. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.”

“A beautiful, small restaurant in Leith. I think I would define it as steeped in classic French cooking, without the associated heaviness. What really stood out – in a positive way – was the service that was outstanding. Second to none. On a more critical note, I don’t think all the dishes (we took the anniversary tasting menu) deliver on neither taste nor technique. For the most part the ingredients used were top quality and very beautiful. But the compositions of the dishes made it somewhat difficult to fully decipher the different flavors. And the overuse of foams – which dilutes flavor – distracted from what was otherwise delicious sauces. Based on the service, they really do want to deliver the best dining experience possible. And with a few technical tweaks I believe they can.”

“My fiancé surprised me with a lunch here 2 weeks ago. We walked in and were immediately met with high class service. We were given a menu that we could choose from for our courses which I really liked having the option to choose. My fiancé is also pescatarian so it was nice she could personally choose what she wanted as some Michelin level restaurants don’t always do. Our lunch included champagne which was quite nice. The portions, quality, and taste were absolutely fantastic! If I’m ever back in the area I would love to do a dinner as I’m sure that’s even better! Highly recommend stopping by! The whole team does a great job!”

“Five stars across the board. We had a fantastic experience at Restaurant Martin Wishart. The service was attentive, polished, and highly professional without ever feeling stiff or suffocating. The room had a calm confidence that matched the food beautifully. We opted for the 25th anniversary tasting menu, and it was clear throughout why the restaurant has maintained its Michelin status for so long. The cooking was firmly rooted in classical French technique, but the menu felt current and expressive, with thoughtful use of ingredients and flavour influences from Italy and Japan. There was an excellent balance of seafood, seasonal products and duck. Overall, this was a refined and memorable meal that delivered exactly what one hopes for from a long-standing Edinburgh fine dining institution. Highly recommended.”
