About Cafe Marlayne
Cafe Marlayne is a French restaurant in Edinburgh at 76 Thistle St, with a very small dining room of just a few tables and fairy lights along one side. The prix fixe menu follows a French bistro style and opens with a Madras mussels starter. Among the mains, the duck breast and the steak come with roasted potatoes and baby carrots. A small wine list sits alongside the food. The kitchen builds its classic French dishes around a variety of local produce.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often single out the duck, ordered by several as a main and called beautiful, with the steak close behind, praised as a good size and well cooked. Mussels come up repeatedly too, including the Madras version with a sauce of excellent depth of flavour. Starters and desserts draw their own mentions, among them the jambon with remoulade, the mushroom pate, the pork belly, the panna cotta, the frangipane tart and the walnut and olive oil cake. One party found the vegetarian gnocchi excellent, and the sea bass was described as melting in the mouth. Service is described as warm, welcoming and prompt, and several call the value good for the city centre. The room is very small with just a few tables, and one reviewer suggests making a reservation because it filled quickly. The one criticism is that the flashing fairy lights along one side of the dining room are distracting. A returning couple on their honeymoon said every visit had been excellent.

“We had a meal here on our honeymoon last week We have been twice before and both times it was excellent. Well last week didn’t disappoint either, Every aspect of our dinner was excellent. The food and wine was superb, I had the sea bass as a main course and it melted in the mouth. My wife had the duck which she said was beautiful. The deserts were just as good and the service efficient and prompt. All round a lovely family restaurant and great value. Thank you”

“Very small restaurant with just a few tables but well worth visiting. I’d recommend making a reservation as the place filled very quickly. The service was very good and the food was excellent, the mushroom pate was superb and the walnut and olive oil cake was just amazing. Our mains were also good, salmon and steak. A small wine list but reasonably priced. I’d recommend this little place and we will be going back.”
